Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Debra Lampert-Rudman
Experienced origami aficionados will enjoy the opportunity to create a ten-monster "meet up" by following the directions in this 95-page activity book. Although it includes four pages of "Basic Folds," they are followed by six pages of "Base Folds" for the depicted monsters to follow. Graphically appealing and well laid out with step-by-step illustrations, the easiest project, Vampire Bat, involves 6 pages of instructions. Other projects include Reptilia, Frankenstein's monster, Creature from the Black Lagoon, demon, werewolf, wolfman, King Ghidora, Count Dracula, and alien. These projects would be best for middle and high school level Halloween art projects or to complement readings of Frankenstein, Dracula, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, or other science fiction or vampire-genre teen fiction. Gr 5-7- For experienced young folders looking to sharpen their skill at creating multilimbed (and headed) figures, Nguyen offers step diagrams-all apparently of his own design-for 10 challenging monsters. The creatures range from a one-piece Vampire Bat to a four-piece Demon, and in the color photos of finished models, all have a rousingly predatory look. Though the creator is not above using the occasional scissors cut, a spot of glue or added color, his digitally drawn and colored diagrams use standard origami notation to indicate folds, are easy to follow, and will produce satisfying results. Beginners might be better off with some of the simpler projects in Isamu Asahi's Origami Monsters (Tuttle, 2002) or John Montroll's many titles.-John Peters, New York Public Library
