Monsters of the Sea

by Rita Golden Gelman, Jean Zallinger

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3-4-- This picture-book sized overview of marine monsters begins in prehistoric times and introduces some of the largest and most dangerous creatures of the past and present seas. Zallinger's exciting, full-color double-page illustrations for each entry make this a delight for browsers, and the clear, readable text supplies pungent details for each animal. A time chart makes it clear that the prehistoric creatures lived long before humans inhabited the Earth. Certain animals that pose no threat to humans are classifed as monsters strictly because of their huge size, and comparisons to everyday items bring these awesome giants into perspective (e.g., the egg of the huge whale shark is bigger than a watermelon). A timely replacement for the many outdated yet still popular books on sea monsters, a topic as timeless as dinosaurs. --Frances E. Millhouser, Reston Regional Library, VA
