Overview

A land rich in its own natural treasures -- mountains and prairies; valleys and forests; rivers, lakes, and falls; silver, coal, and copper -- Montana is rich in history as well. Lewis and Clark scoured Montana -- fording rivers, climbing mountains, and charting countless discoveries -- for a Northwest Passage. Custer waged his last war against the Plains Indians in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. And Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce Indians laid down his rifle in the Bearpaw Mountains and declared: "From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever." Amidst these discoveries and Indian battles came trappers, miners, settlers, cowboys, and farmers, each making his home under a "Big Sky," in a land of many faces.

Montana: Land of Contrast tells the history of a state beset by many differences. East and West are different lands and have produced different people, economies, politics, and cultures. Montana was simultaneously home to the cattle barons and their endless grass kingdom, and the copper kings who controlled Butte, "the richest hill on earth." But even the kings weren't as mighty as the mineral empire they built -- the Anaconda Copper Mining Company reigned for almost a century.

Author Harry W. Fritz skillfully recreates the stories behind this Land of Contrast. He pushes beyond Montana's past and uniquely records contemporary Montana. Detailing the birth of the state's second constitution in 1972, Fritz shows how Montana's past and present differences achieved a delicate balance.

Three hundred illustrations, carefully selected by picture researcher William Farr, depict Montana's heritage in all its diversity. Twenty-four pages of color photographs -- including the magnificent paintings of Charles M. Russell and Karl Bodmer -- bring the Big Sky Country to life. And in a special chapter, entitled "Chronicles of Leadership" a spotlight is put on the businesses and organizations that contribute to the ever-changing commercial environment that defines the Land of Contrast.
