Angeline Stoll Lillard is Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. An authority on learning and development, she was awarded the Developmental Psychology Division of the American Psychological Association's Outstanding Dissertation Award in 1992 and its Boyd McCandless Award for Distinguished Early Career Contribution in 1999.

    Fabulous!

    As a mother of two young children, I have 30 minutes a night to enjoy some personal reading time. I found myself looking forward all day to reading more of this book. It has so many interesting insights into the hows and whys of the Montessori method! I'm sure I must have been driving my husband mad with all the "Honey, listen to this!", and "Oh, this is interesting, let me read this part to you..." He finally read the book himself when I was done, and he was also extremely impressed with Dr. Lillard's work, which says a lot since he's an engineer who appreciates good research and writing.
    I found it VERY easy and enjoyable to read even though much of the subject was research and case study. If you enjoy discovering insights into your child, how they learn best, and want to know why the Montessori method is exceptional, this is a great book.

    Great place for a skeptic to start

    This book sets out to explain via examples from modern research and case studies, why Montessori is a good educational choice for everyone who is interested. It does an excellent of dispelling myths such as children have no rules or boundaries and the curriculum leaving children with gaps in knowledge due the lack of depth or precision. The author readily admits that many schools use the Montessori name without actually adhering to its principles and that therein lies a huge problem when looking for a reliable program. This book exists for sake of helping skeptics understandexactly what true Montessori is and is not.

    If you are like me, you will have "aha" moments as you read and you will be pleasantly surpised at how wrong everything you thought you knew about Montessori is. This book is for the people who want to know what science says in relation to the Montessori system. It will reference many of the greats of educational psychology as many were contemporaries of Dr. Maria Montessori. It will report and analyze the findings of many case studies using both Montessori and non Montessori classrooms. And it will make you feel like you learned something.

    I would recommend this book to parents who are considering Montessori for their kids; traditional teachers who want know what Montessori is really about; and anyone who wants to reliable research based information to share the next time you hear a parent or teacher say that Montessori is simply letting kids do whatever they want whenever they want. It is an easy read even with the main information coming from research and case study. I found it to be not only enlightening but also engrossing and enjoyable.
