Overview

Thoroughly updated for its Second Edition, this practical guide will aid residents and clinicians in diagnosing and treating the full spectrum of mood disorders. Using the conversational style and clinical vignettes found in all Practical Guides in Psychiatry titles, Dr. Ghaemi explains how to accurately diagnose unipolar depression and bipolar disorder and offers specific, detailed, evidence-based recommendations on pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy.

Chapters review the pharmacology of all antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and antipsychotics in current use and point out these drugs' advantages and drawbacks in specific clinical situations. Other chapters address clinical problems such as depression, mania, and ADHD in children and the conundrum of schizoaffective disorder.

The Practical Guides in Psychiatry series provides quick, concise information for professionals on the front lines of mental health care. Written in an easy-to-read, conversational style, these invaluable resources take you through each step of the psychiatric care process, delivering fast facts and helpful strategies that help you provide effective and compassionate care to your patients.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Raj Tummala, MD (Wyeth Pharmaceuticals)
Description: This is an easy to read update of a book designed to assist clinicians, patients, and their families understand depression and other mood disorders.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive and easy to read review of depression and other mood disorders so that clinicians and patients can better diagnose the illness as well as to provide a resource of available treatment options.
Audience: This book is targeted at clinicians, residents, students, patients, and their families who want a better understanding of mood disorders.
Features: Since the last edition of this book, there have been tremendous advances in our understanding of the biology of mood disorders as well newer treatment options. This edition captures some of these advances and tries to provide a quick reference for clinicians, patients, and families to better diagnose and understand the spectrum of mood disorders. This edition has been updated to include information from recent NIMH-funded studies such as STAR-D and CATIE. Also new to this edition is a chapter on mood disorders in children as well as a discussion of new drugs available since the last edition. While some of the information is evidence based, the author puts forward his own views, which at times seem controversial and without any scientific or clinical basis. Information is augmented with case vignettes that explain symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment in easy to read terms. Information is also highlighted in the form of tables, graphs and chart. Of special mention is a new chapter on diagnostic interviews as well as updated appendixes on rating scales.
Assessment: This is a reader friendly book on depression and mood disorders. The author tries to differentiate this book from other available resources on the market but it seems to fall short.
