Barnes & Noble
With R&B divas Beyoncé and Ashanti also releasing highly anticipated albums during the summer of 2003, Mya could have found herself lost in the shuffle. But three years after her sophomore album, Fear of Flying, Mya proves that she's in a class by herself with the beguiling Moodring. Filled with emotional testimonies, funny anecdotes, and raw lyrics, Moodring displays Mya's complex persona -- her ability to show vulnerability even as she flaunts her sexuality. On the energetic, Missy Elliott–produced first single, "My Love Is Like...Wo" which is based on rapper Black Rob's 1998 hit "Like Whoa", Mya playfully brags about her "assets" with blunt lyrics like "My ass is like wo," and on the frisky "Anatomy 1 on 1,"...

On the energetic, Missy Elliott–produced first single, "My Love Is Like...Wo" which is based on rapper Black Rob's 1998 hit "Like Whoa", Mya playfully brags about her "assets" with blunt lyrics like "My ass is like wo," and on the frisky "Anatomy 1 on 1," she shows just how in tune she is with her sensuality. While she makes savvy use of samples from the Pharcyde on the super-mellow "Fallen" and from Rick James on the sassy "Sophisticated Woman," Mya shines alongside two notable collaborators: DJ Clue, who produced her hit "The Best of Me Remix," adds his Midas touch to "Hurry Up," and reggae mega-star Sean Paul joins her on the Janet Jackson-reminiscent "Things Come and Go." On the cheeky, house music–inspired "Whatever B*tch," Mya playfully dismisses her haters, while her whimsical cover of Tom Petty's "Free Fallin' " finds her musing on life's unpredictable nature. The musically diverse Moodring gives fans an extended look into Mya's ever-changing moods. LaShieka Purvis
All Music Guide - Andy Kellman
With all the emotional and stylistic range that an album called Moodring should present, Mya comes up with her best and most varied set of songs yet. The album's biggest highlights are almost completely different from one another, demonstrated right from the beginning; the opener, the strutting, boastful, Missy Elliott-produced "My Love Is Like...Wo" is immediately followed by the yearning, elegant "Falling." The constant changes of direction can be a little jarring on the first couple plays, but they eventually become one of the album's charms. Even the two expectedly strong Jam & Lewis productions, the blissed-out "Anatomy 1On1" "Let's make a child" and the stressed-out "Late" "Should've been more careful when I let him rock my boat" are at two ends. Most surprising of all is "Whatever Bitch," a stage-ready booty track in which Mya shows off her foul-mouthed catty side. Two big missteps back threaten to kill her momentum, however, and they both come at the very end of this very long album: the bloodless cover of Tom Petty's "Free Fallin'" is worse than you could possibly imagine, and the awkward inclusion of "Real Compared to What," the soft drink ad that originated as a civil rights/Vietnam protest song, was a very bad idea.

The title promises that the music, like a mood ring, will reveal everything.

    Whoa!!

Mya has outdone herself this time. Moodring is her best album to date. All of the songs have a specific meaning and like a moodring you can hear her different moods in each song. I love it.

    Finally Mya gets it right!

Finally after 5 years in the public eye Mya has finally found her voice. HEre its sexy, reflective and mature, nothing like her ghetto, super skinny soprano that used to annoy me greatly lol. Production is mello and laidback allowing her buttery voice to shine. Writing wise the album is very mature unlike the last two that more teen oriented. She talks about sex, love, haters, clubbing and her friends. Mya has finally won me over as a fan.

    Only One

The first time I listened to this cd, I wasn't sure if I liked it. As I listened again, however, I realized there was only one song (Sophisticated Lady) that I wanted to fastfoward. By the third listen, I liked the album a lot. By the fourth, I really wanted to find my boyfriend. I think that Mya did a good job with this release... its not the best album ever, but its fun, sensual, and, in spite of much hype about primarily being hyper-sexualized, is very diverse. Yes, there are songs that are incredibly sexy. But there are also songs about obsession, joyful love, the sorrow of losing your best friend, and telling people to step off. I think its a testament to Mya as an artist that she can sing such a wide range of songs.

    Moodring is a gem

Mya Moodring The young bubbly R&B teen singer now turned sex-kitten who has made her way into corsets, inch long eyelashes, and a garter belts has ventured in this summer with her third release Moodring. With the theme of the album being about love (go figure), Mya takes this subject head on many different forms. Her boasty, concieted first track and premier single "My Love is Like Wo" showcases a confidence in a woman and her sexuality. Fallen, a hip-hop sprinkled tune of falling head over heels is a breezy song of accomplished vocals. "Why you gotta Look so Good" and electronic song of being stuck in a relationship because of physical matters starts off appealing with the lyrics "Yesterday was not a good day.I went to the Doctor to hear the news.He had the nerve to call me crazy, daranged,A victim of child abuse." But trails off onto a light subject of her man being to sexy to leave with G-unit rapper Lloyd Banks." Step", a demand for respect from girls trying to get with her man is in its own way pretty safe. "Sophisticated Lady" takes the cake as Mya shows off her 23 years by being "as nasty as she wants to be". They lyrics speak for themselves..I'm ya momma (Don't call me by my name).Lets play house (That's right). When your bad (Pull your pants down). You get time out." while using Rick James Cold-Blooded. "No Sleep" has to be a true R&B gem. The vocal duet with whomever she's singin with fits perfectly in this song. One of the best songs on this album, "Anatomy 1 on 1" is a throw back to Prince, not so surprising since Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced it. A mature song of sexual escapades. Hurry Up seems like an album filler, and would have ben fine without DJ Clue. "Things Come and Go" will probably be the best Sean-Pual collaboration to date. A bubbly song of true love lasting that brings a smile to the face. "You" is a typical ballad of someone being everything for her, yet the vocal arrangement for this track is the best feature which runs into the heart-wrenching ballad "After The Rain" dedicated to Left-Eye of TLC ad respectively for Aaliyah. This is one of the better tribute songs for the fallen artists. "Late", a 40's jazz vocally inspired tune of missing her period and fearing pregnancy is a nice way to set herself apart from the rest of the R&B divettes this summer. "Whatever B" which is a remake of her Song Whatever Chick is funny and ver campy using drag queens for and added effect humor. The next song, Taste This is love at it's worst. A scorned woman with revenge on her mind is like Aaliyah's "What If", only less agressive and more stormy. "Take a picture" is a summery song that is great for cruising in August. Free Fallin, a Tom Petty remake can't beat the original, but is an excellent try. The bonus track Real "Compared to What" with Common was a great listen. Out of 10 stars I'd give this 9. The album showcases mature subjects along with Mya's accomplished vocals that would surprise many

Wish I could give it 3.5 stars

My first listen to a Mya cd was a good one. I like Mood Ring. She said that it represents things she's been through and different moods and it does. I think the production is on point. There's maybe 1 or 2 songs I don't like, but all in all I like Mood Ring alot. It's got a lot of flavor to it and isn't the same recycled garbage (like some other recently released cds).

    Huge Improvement, Good CD!!!!!!!!!!

I like Mya new CD a lot. She covers different topics, which adds more diversity to her CD. Beyonce and Ashanti mainly talk about love, which is cool, but there are other aspects to life and love. Also, her vocal skills have improved. And she is already the best dancer of all the "divas of the summer" Buy the CD!!!!

    I like it!

I think that this new CD is good for Mya. She's obviously gotten more mature and she's seems to be letting herself go in the music, in a more personal way, which we didn't see in her previous albums as much. My favorite track is Sophisticated Lady, but they're all pretty good. This album makes me just want to go out and enjoy myself.

    Mya is back!!!!

This is a good comeback for Mya. Her vocals are stonger and her lyrics are real. Mya is different from the other R&B artist that are out today, they are also good. This album shows Mya growth has a woman and a artist. I can listen to this album non stop. Moodring gets a 100%

    work on it!!!

I think that mya needs more faster songs. The lyrics are good, but it needs more beat to it. I think some of the rythums or beats were not very good. I am the kind of person who likes fast songs. I haven't really listened to any other of her cd's, but this one doesn't sound very well. I think next time more fast songs, but not that fast, because some of the music sounded like a club that z107.7 would be hosting or whattever. I think a little bit more flava needs to be in it.

Better than Beyonce & Ashanti put together!

Wicked album. Full of great tunes, pop & R n' B style which suits Mya perfectly. She sounds stunning on this record, and you can't help but get into the music on here.

    Excellent Work Baby!

I have to say that this new CD is GREAT! Especially compared to her last one which I did not buy. (sorry Mya) I am going to buy this one. She was always good but I think she has gotten so much better with time. The music on this new CD is the best I heard from her yet. Keep it going MYA!!! Oh plus: THAT GIRL CAN DANCE HER BUTT OFF!!!

    Don't bother

I am not a Mya fan, but I thought I would give the album a listen over at MTV.com. Anyway, I shouldn't have wasted my time. The first single is ok, but everything else is just too boring or has been done before by someone else far more effective. Mya's voice sounds a little too thin on some of the songs and some of the beats she uses are pretty annoying. Sorry, Mya, but your album sucks.

    Mya is back again!

Mya's forthcoming album, "Moodring" is sure to be an album that fans like me have been waiting for. Her first single, "My Love Is Like...Wo" is making heavy rotations everywhere and it's a really good song. So if you wanna hear more of her new album, I'd advise you to go to her website, myamya.com for a sneak preview. Otherwise, buy the album when it comes out July 22nd! Support your music stores. DO NOT BOOTLEG THIS ALBUM!

This album is cool. My Love Is Like... Wo is a great song and the album is too. I don't know where ya been, but all of Mya's albums are good. I like em' all. If you really like Mya go get tha album. If not then just leave it alone. Especially if Mya doesnt sing the kinda music you like.

    What Happened Mya Baby

I heard this album and I think it reaks of bad production. Her first sing is alright and you might can find a couple good songs after listening to it a couple of times. I mean I love Mya, but she really could have done better. Her second album was pretty bad, but i liked that one more than I liked this. If ur a tru Mya fan go and cop this album, if not don't waste your money. Just listen to it before u buy it and i think thats a good warning.
