Now in MOON DANCE, the world at large thinks Samantha has developed a rare skin disease, a disease which forces her to quit her day job and stay out of the light of the sun. Working the night shift as a private investigator, Samantha is hired by Kingsley Fulcrum to investigate the murder attempt on his life, a horrific scene captured on TV and seen around the country. But as the case unfolds, Samantha discovers Kingsley isn't exactly what he appears to be; after all, there is a reason why he survived five shots to the head.

Editorial Reviews

Blog - Piers Anthony
"I enjoyed this immensely; it was the most fun novel of this present collection. The protagonist, Samantha Moon, is a female vampire with a husband and children. Those predate her condition; six years ago she was attacked by a vampire and rendered into one. Now she's trying to carry on with family and private eye business, and she's a feisty, skilled person, so is doing mostly okay. It is not a horror story; she buys animal blood to eat and doesn't generally prey on humans. I love this!"
Blurb - Lisa Tenzin-Dolma
"MOON DANCE is absolutely brilliant!"
Blog - Eve Paludan
"Moon Dance by J.R. Rain is a brilliant urban fantasy novel with engaging characters, witty dialogue, a page-turning plot, and clever subplots that unfurl like a well-paced movie in your mind."
Blurb - Gemma Halliday
"One of the best book I've read in a long time!"
Blurb - April Vine
"J.R.Rain's MOON DANCE is a fabulous urban fantasy replete with multifarious and unusual characters, a perfectly synchronized plot, vibrant dialogue and sterling witticism all wrapped in voice that is as beautiful as it is rich and vividly intense as it is relaxed."

    Enjoyable and recommended read

I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I sort of had my eye on this one for a while, but never really got around to reading until now. -I'm glad I finally did. :) I was also very surprised that the author is a man...I thought for sure it was a woman, based on the main character! :)

The main character isn't your typical vampire, since she's a Mom, with the minivan and all. I was a little worried that would ruin the book, and it would be nothing but a whiny soccer mom, but she is far from that, and I really liked her personality. The book is full of plenty of humor, mystery, sadness, and delicate romance. Very nice combination.

Having said that, I would improve a few things in this book. There seemed to be a lack of logic or care with Samantha at times. Her husband is very obviously cheating on her, and yet she feels "guilty" for having dreams and lust-filled thoughts of another man. So your husband's "screwing around" on you, but it's not ok to innocently find another man attractive? Just didn't make sense. She finally does address the husband-cheating issue, but all too late, in my opinion. Also, a very minor and petty detail, but there's a reference to a "game boy" in the book. Unless I missed the mention of the time/year of the setting of the book being in the past, Game Boys are old school nowadays. :) It's insignificant, but also something simple enough for it to be obviously not of the current times.

Overall, I really enjoyed this quick read. I would have liked a little more romance, but it was still there enough to keep you reading. No erotic scenes or wording, so it's pretty "safe" for those who are easily offended in that sense.

    Good Story-poorly written and edited

The story line of this series is good, even unique. However the writing and editing are often sub-par. The author repeats herself very often (reminding the reader of things she has already told us earlier in the same book) the phrasing is often stilted and awkward. I find myself re-writing sentences in my head every other page or so which makes for a frustrating read. This series has potential but needs refining.

    Quick Read

I finished this book in less than 2 hours. It was an ok read. The plot was fairly interesting. I would have loved more character and story development, it seemed lacking in those areas. I also didn't like the excessive amount of pages at the end of the book featuring other books, it seemed a bit pushy. Those pages could have been filled with more to the actual story contained in the book.

    Love vampire mom!

Great story about a mom who becomes a vampire. She always puts her kids first. She also works as a detective. I'm addicted to everything J.R. Rain writes.

I felt Moon Dance (Vampire for Hire #1) was lacking in fantasy a

I felt Moon Dance (Vampire for Hire #1) was lacking in fantasy action and humor, which made the story move painstakingly slow for me. The two most interesting characters are; Fang, an on line friend we never got to meet, yet his Internet conversations with Sam are curiously entertaining, but far and few between, and a werewolf, Kingsley Fulcrum. But we never really get to see the wolf Kingsley has tucked away, only his human side, albeit sexy and interesting, but I think Rain lacked by not using the potential the wolf would have brought into the plot.

All in all, it wasn't a put it down, I can't finish it kind of book, but it wasn't a hurry up and get dinner on the table because I can't wait to see what's going to happen next kind of book either. But then Mrs. Moon was going through a bad relationship, losing her children with the threat of a divorce, and just starting to get the hang of her immortal powers. Soooo, I will probably kindle the second in the series with the hope Rain takes me deeper into the fantasy side of her urban fantasy.(

    Didn't keep my interest

It wasn't bad, but I won't be reading the rest of the series. I really enjoyed the new spin that J. R. Rain put on the vampire "condition" since there are so many books out there that are essentially the same formula. However, getting into this book was highly difficult. Everything seemed underdeveloped, the writing included lengthy definitions of things that did not pertain to the story, and I felt that a lot of the lengthy descriptions could have been moved to other areas in the book where they would have contributed to the story. The "twist" at the end was not built up enough, either and the editing was poor. Bottom line: Loved the idea for the story, and the new twist on vampires, but was not as well-written as it could have been.

    Unlike others I've read

Rather than a romance novel with a paranormal twist, this book is more of a vampire mystery with a little romance. Perhaps because it was written by a man, the creatures in this book are not sexy and there is no neat little bow that ties everything up in the last chapter. I loved it; I read books 1-3 in a couple days and can't wait for Moon Child to come out. Read it.
