Meet the Author

David Stanley has spent much of the past three decades on the road. He has crossed six continents overland and visited 212 of the planet's 245 countries and territories. His travel guidebooks to the South Pacific, Micronesia, Alaska, Eastern Europe, and Cuba opened those areas to independent travelers for the first time.

For his first trip across the Pacific in 1978, David bought the longest ticket ever issued in Canada by Pan American Airways. Since then he has returned many times, visiting and revisiting the islands. His career as a travel writer began with the letters he wrote to Bill Dalton and Tony Wheeler, the pioneers of budget travel to Asia in the 1970s. That feedback soon led to guides of his own. With over a million copies sold, he's still on the road researching guidebooks.

Though David has traveled widely and become a specialist on many parts of the world, he keeps returning to his favorite area, the South Pacific. Also the author of Moon Tahiti and Moon South Pacific, David enjoys receiving mail from those who have used his guides. His website, southpacific.org, provides contact details.

The best resource for Fiji travel

We've been talking about going to Fiji for years, and have looked at other books, but this book trumps them all. It's very thorough, with excellent descriptions that make us wish we could pack our bags and go today. Author David Stanley obviously loves Fiji, and his passion comes through in his writing. We also appreciate the way he doesn't sugar coat the less than perfect. This seems like a book you can really trust. And the history sprinkled throughout 'great stories of Capt. Bligh, for instance', the interesting boxes full of fun information, and the very useable maps make it easy to get educated in all things Fijian. We also love the beginning section with beautiful color photography. It would be nice if all photos could be in color, but we'd happily trade the excellent info in the book for color pictures. This book provided us with our new dream adventure vacation: A stay on the Yasawa Islands, where there are no motorized land vehicles or roads. You can stay in a thatched 'bure' and make a vacation exploring the island chain via a catamaran line that offers a kind of 'Eurail Pass' for island hoppers. Who knew such a place still exists?!

    A reviewer

My wife and I have been to Fiji several times. We are planning a trip for next summer and just purchased David Stanley's 8th edtion of the Fiji Handbook. It is by far the best of the travel handbooks out there. Clear, easy to read maps, color pictures, and updated internet resources. Based on the resorts I have been to the recommendations are right on!

    Newer book on Fiji

I picked this book since it seemed more current than the other e-book choices. The information was helpful, but very limited for the places we visited - Nadi and Taveuni. You probably will get better information on local sites and transportation from the locals. However, it was a good start, and fortunately our taxi driver from the airport in Nadi gave us good tips on transportation. Although meters are used by taxis from the airport to local hotels, most other taxi fares are negotiated upon arrive. Tripadvisor and google searches provided more information on local touring information. Book was most helpful for lodgings and less so for dining.

    portable daily informative

i got the 2007 fiji moon and loved it. i used different colored post it notes to mark my places, and the book was loaded. the layout was easy to follow along as we drove/rode/flew, and the poor thing is a bit tattered after 3 weeks of daily use, we never left home without it.
