Travel books can be child-centered even if they're not written in kid talk. The multitude of popular books by writer Charlotte Zolotow and photographer Tana Hoban prove their commitment to kids. What happens when they join forces to explain Paris? The result is poetry in illustration and verse. A traveling mother promises to translate her experience for her daughter, keeping in mind her request, "Remember the special things to tell me, the things I'd like if I were there." So begins a vision of things that children would love in this magical city. There's a man feeding a "cluster of silvery pigeons," "parks like paintings and paintings like parks," "a tiny carousel, like a birthday cake" and best of all, "the same moon shining on you, so I knew we weren't far apart at all." The photographs are brilliant and sparkling with light and color.

PreS-Gr 3-- An enchanting and beautifully designed collaboration. A young girl asks her parents who are leaving for Paris to `` `Remember the special things to tell me,' '' the things that she would like if she were there. Zolotow's lyrical text and Hoban's evocative photos present the catalog of images the mother brings home to her daughter, not touristy sights and scenes, but more personal ones, such as flowers and trees, bookstalls and bread, pigeons and dogs, a carousel and a fountain. As a final statement of reassurance, the woman concludes that , `` `the moon was the best because it was the same moon shining on you, so I knew we weren't far apart at all.' '' Full-page, full-color photos face the large-print text, which is framed in art nouveau designs and surrounded by pastel colors. Small, rectangular closeups of the photos, also framed, highlight the feelings behind each memory. This book could supplement discussions of foreign countries or aid families traveling to France, in conjunction with Roxie Munro's quite different, but equally well-done Inside-Outside Book of Paris (Dutton, 1992). However, children do not need to know anything about the city to sense the magic of this unique presentation. Paris is not only the setting, it's the subject of this descriptive picture book. It begins with a little girl's instructions to her mother, who's leaving for Paris, "Remember the special things to tell me." Her mother's recollections constitute the text, while Hoban's glorious full-color photographs offer windows into those memories. On each left-hand page is a large photo, while the text appears on the right-hand page, accompanied by a small detail from the preceding picture. The presence of the little photo challenges kids to find where it fits into the big picture and, in doing so, leads them to look at the illustrations more closely and attentively. Unlike other picture book guides to Paris, this focuses not on famous sites but on everyday sights that might intrigue a young child; such as "how people carried long loaves of unwrapped bread, like sticks under their arms" and "how people sat at outdoor cafes while underneath the tables the dogs watched everyone go by." Beautifully designed from jacket to borders, this book will appeal to parents as well as their children.

Meet the Author

Charlotte Zolotow—author, editor, publisher, and educator—has one of the most distinguished reputations in the field of children's literature. She has written more than seventy books, many of which are picture-book classics, such as Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present and William's Doll. She lives in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.

Tana Hoban's photographs have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and in galleries around the world. She has won many gold medals and prizes for her work as a photographer and filmmaker. Her books for children are known and loved throughout the world.
