Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Margaret Orto
Bear wonders what the moon tastes like as he watches it one evening with his friend Little Bird. The two friends get to work building a rocket ship so they can find out. They work all summer long and into the fall. Little Bird flies south but Bear continues working into the winter and finally finishes. He climbs inside, counts down, and promptly falls asleep. When Bear briefly wakes up mid-winter and sees the snowy landscape, he assumes he has traveled to the moon and makes a mooncake. Then he falls back asleep until spring. When Little Bird returns Bear tells him he made it to the moon, and even took a bite of it. His conclusion: the moon tastes delicious. This classic story from the “Moonbear” series has been reissued for a new generation of toddlers and young children to delight in the silliness and fun of the text and accompanying simple and endearing illustrations. Most toddlers will not make the connection between a bear sleeping and hibernation while slightly older children certainly will. The book, however, will appeal to both age groups. Asch’s mostly square format full or nearly full page illustrations are offset by white space and bold, clear type; the overall effect is a soothing design that matches the simplicity of the story. It is a charming and magical package. Reviewer: Margaret Orto; Ages 4 to 8.
