Children's LiteratureCatherine Ames has a father who drinks too much. She is going to spend the summer with him, but he doesn't pick her up at boarding school for three weeks. Once her father arrives, so does the alcohol. On the way home, they stop at a bar where her father gets very drunk. He promises never to drink again, and at first, it looks like he might hold to his promise. When he is not drinking, Mr. Ames is warm and charming. He spends time reading to Catherine, he asks her about her school, and he listens to her stories. However, all changes once he takes a drink of the alcohol. Hurtful and mean words fly out of his mouth as Catherine tries to wrestle with her conflicted love for her father. The book includes beautiful descriptions and wise words of wisdom that come from all characters as they try to teach Catherine that loving someone is not always easy. The novel would make a good choice for a high school English classroom discussion. 2003 (orig. 1986), Aladdin Paperbacks, Ages 13 to 15.
