Overview

Their romance seems as doomed as the clashing forces of Victorian England itself--science versus spirit, propriety against compassion, appearance over truth. But there's a plaintive cry for understanding under the surface of the cool, capable investigator that rends Olivia deBaine's soft heart and draws her to him like a scone draws Devonshire cream. Nor has Harrison Pell ever met a woman like the lady of the Manor, full of spirit and life, warmth and healing. Not even the shocking evidence he uncovers while investigating the attacks on her father's life can keep him away. Despite secrets and deceit, harsh accusations and ancient evil forces, Olivia and Harrison battle to save those in their care, while treading the treacherous path to one another. Just when their future seems assured, Harrison learns what must turn him away forever. On the rocky cliffs of Devon, the two struggle, grasping for the shattered glass of a moonraking mirror. Will its broken surface reflect a relationship that has grown strong enough to hold their differences, or merely shards that kill?

Meet the Author

Eleanor Sullo writes a food and spirituality column and gardens voraciously all-year-round. Between traveling and writing, she directs programs for families and adults and spends enough time with strong women to feel their inspiration and support, along with that of her terrific husband and extended family who all live on a self-sufficient family farm in rural Connecticut. Her ongoing commitment to help others face life’s trials and grow has evolved from her training as teacher and spiritual guide. As with the besieged characters in The Moonrakers, and in Menopause Murders, so often love is the answer, says Ms. Sullo, while faith and trust, and a sense of humor, put the frosting on the cake!

"You gave Mrs. Linton foxglove"

"Why not? Granny used it herself for weakness of heart." She returned to the path but he dragged her a full yard backward and clutched her by the shoulders.

"Olivia, foxglove makes the medicine called digitalis. It's a dangerous drug that can over-stimulate the heart and cause death. I've seen it used as a fatal poison!"

The breath washed out of her in a rush. "I don't believe you. She seemed so well, her eyes so bright."

"From dilation of the pupils--not a good sign. Trust me, the wrong dosage can be fatal!"

"No!" She yanked away from him and tore into the clearing, plummeting pell mell toward the Linton cottage. If anything has happened because of me, because of the foxglove--! His footsteps pounded right behind her, as she leapt over the dog on the doorstep and burst in.

"Thank God, Miss Olivia!" Bob Linton wrung his hands, gripped with emotion. He glanced over her shoulder at Harrison behind her. "Ye knew, didn't ye? Something's amiss!"

She hurried to the sickroom, Belle at her side, her ashen face ten years older.

"She can't catch her breath, Miss. Heart's pounding so, says she'll jump out o' her skin. Though she seems to have fallen asleep now."

"Or is too sick to talk!" Olivia groaned when she saw Mrs. Linton lying there, looking ravaged. Fingers on her wrist indicated the pounding of her blood was far too rapid to be healthy.

Her cheeks were garish red, her breath raspy and shallow. Olivia pulled the woman's eyelids up and saw that her pupils were still dilated. "Oh, God, no?"

"What, Miss Olivia? Will she be all right?"

"Oh, Belle, I've given her too much foxglove. I've failed her!" A deepvoice and sharp words cut through her shuddering.

"Olivia, control yourself. Use your skills to help this poor family." Harrison had pushed his way up to the bedside and gripped her arm with his powerful fingers.

"What skills? What do I know, really?"

"Stop it!"

She felt the hard imprint of his fingers on her flesh. His eyes were wild, his black hair fell recklessly over one eye as he shook her. She tried in her confusion and pain to concentrate, but noticed instead how all his city finery was soiled from his adventures of the day. Her hand almost rose to cleanse the collar of his shirt, smeared with a spot of blood and some leaf bits, though it was a crazy thing to be noticing with his words reverberating in her ears.

"...must help her. An herb to counteract--now, Olivia!"
