Children's LiteratureThere are many counting books for children. However, this title tackles a slightly more advanced concept: counting by twos. A trolley driver picks up passengers by twos: a duet of ducks, a pair of pigs, a twosome of geese. Everyone is nice and polite on the bus until a cow cuts in line. Her repetitive request for everyone to "Mooove Over!" so she can have room to spread out a picnic eventually forces all the other passengers onto the roof of the bus. Once the driver realizes what is going on, he puts the cow off the bus and everyone resumes their seats, two by two. The last page contains different fun activities for children to do that will help them learn counting by twos. While the book is entertaining and educational, there is some questionable grammar (the author's penchant for beginning sentences with "and," for example). Meisel's illustrations are well-drawn and action-packed. 2004, Holiday House, Ages 3 up.
