Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
There are many counting books for children. However, this title tackles a slightly more advanced concept: counting by twos. A trolley driver picks up passengers by twos: a duet of ducks, a pair of pigs, a twosome of geese. Everyone is nice and polite on the bus until a cow cuts in line. Her repetitive request for everyone to "Mooove Over!" so she can have room to spread out a picnic eventually forces all the other passengers onto the roof of the bus. Once the driver realizes what is going on, he puts the cow off the bus and everyone resumes their seats, two by two. The last page contains different fun activities for children to do that will help them learn counting by twos. While the book is entertaining and educational, there is some questionable grammar (the author's penchant for beginning sentences with "and," for example). Meisel's illustrations are well-drawn and action-packed. 2004, Holiday House, Ages 3 up.
—Amie Rose Rotruck
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-Since his trolley can hold only 20 passengers, the driver carefully counts the riders, two by two, as they board. When a rude cow elbows her way into the line, he gets confused and loses track, but drives off anyway. Meanwhile, the cow, wearing a bright purple dress splashed with stars, barges through the crowd with bags and boxes, intimidating the other animals with her bellow. They retreat to the roof until she lounges alone in peace. When the driver notices that most of his passengers are missing, he searches for them. He demands a recount as they climb back on board and, this time, discovers one rider too many. Readers will cheer as the ill-mannered bovine gets her comeuppance, and Meisel's energetic and humorous acrylic illustrations will keep them in stitches as they practice counting by twos. A page of suggested activities is appended.-Laurie Edwards, West Shore School District, Camp Hill, PA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Counting by twos gets a little animalish in this tale of a rude bovine traveler. A driver with room for 20 passengers counts each pair as they board his trolley. Ducks, geese, sheep, pigs, and horses all climb up and find seats. But when a herd of kids boards, a cow cuts in line and the driver loses count. The weary cow asks each pair in turn if they have enough room. As they respond affirmatively, she demands they "mooove over" to make room for her, her bags, her picnic lunch, and her beach chair. When the driver notices the passengers on the roof and only the cow left on the trolley, he ejects her as "one too many." Meisel's colorful illustrations fit the tale perfectly, with the sweet facial expressions of the cow lending surprise to her rude behavior. Not only will readers learn to count by twos, they will also learn the words used to describe pairs: duet, couple, twosome, partners. The final page lists five other math-related activities that can be used to extend the concepts in this funny story. (Picture book. 4-8)

2-4-6-8 a book you will appreciate

How much fun can there be when counting by twos? Twice as much fun for sure when the animals are let on trolley #246 in pairs. The driver only allows 20 animals on the trolley at one time. Yikes! What happens when a cow cuts the line? The driver loses count--that is what happens. Everyone has to move over to accomodate the extra passenger, who plans on being really comfortable. Thank goodness the driver recounts and removes the pushy cow. Children will enjoy counting and recounting the animals. If that is not enough, there are more counting activities at the end of the book. Move to trolley #246 and count on a really good time. This is a great choice for elementary school libraries, classrooms, and public libraries.
