Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Melissa A. Caudill
A moose and a pig named Hildy are the main characters in this series of chapter books about their adventures and unlikely friendship. Hildy is ecstatic about being invited by farmer Wendell down south to a "Pig Pickin'" at the fair. Moose volunteers to drive his friend down and make a vacation out of it, even stopping to dress shop along the way. Hildy has grand visions of winning the Pig Pickin' crown and enthusiastically eats her way through the fair as Wendell keeps buying her pizza slices, and ice cream cones to "fatten her up." Meanwhile, lonely Moose follows his nose to the delicious-smelling Pig Pickin' barbeque! He tries to convince Hildy that she is in danger from Wendell, who is not her friend after all. Young readers will delight in Moose's clever trick to save innocent Hildy's life. This is a somewhat disturbing concept of the pig's best friend being so drawn to the smell of another roasting pig, but perhaps the message of loyalty and friendship will override any of these issues.

Gr 1-3-This easy, transitional chapter book features the characters from Moose's Big Idea and Moose Crossing (both Marshall Cavendish, 2005). Hildy the pig asks Moose to go with her to a pig pickin' down South. Thinking that it is a beauty contest, she buys a special dress and shoes. Moose, however, is suspicious and discovers that "Wendell's Pig Pickin'" is a well-known pork barbecue. While Wendell is fattening Hildy up with pizza and ice cream, Moose comes up with a plan to save her. He keeps substituting her dress for larger sizes and her shoes for smaller sizes, so that Wendell will think she is sick. Readers will enjoy the lighthearted humor and playful, mostly full-page pencil and gray-wash drawings.-Marilyn Ackerman, Brooklyn Public Library, NY Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A porcine ing‚nue narrowly escapes being the main entr‚e at a country fair, thanks to some fancy footwork and cunning deductions of her companion, Moose. When Hildy, a vainglorious pig, receives a gracious invite to a Pig Pickin' competiton, she naturally assumes she's competing for the title of a beauty queen. However, Moose comes to the realization en route that Hildy may be headed to a destination of a different sort. Greene's farcical tale relies heavily on gags and Hildy's utter na‹vet‚ in the face of the ominous evidence. With a slick farmer villain to boo, a wily Moose to champion and a damsel in distress-albeit a bit of a buffoon-Greene's country caper will have readers eagerly turning the pages to the climatic conclusion. Mathieu's pencil-and-gray wash illustrations feature largely throughout the tale, making this a nice bridge for readers who are ready to make the leap from beginning chapter books to more challenging reading.
