Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

For four decades, the Moosewood Restaurant in Ithaca, New York has been satisfying diners with its imaginatively designed vegetarian meals; and for only a few years less, it has been spreading with the word with inviting cookbooks. The latest installment serves as a 40th anniversary celebration, collecting the 250 most-requested dishes from the eatery and its cookbooks. All the Moosewood classics are here; from the Classic Moosewood Tofu Burger and Sweet-Potato and Black Bean Burrito to the die-for Vegan Chocolate Cake and the famous Moosewood Restaurant Brownies. Definitely a kitchen shelf keeper.

Publishers Weekly
The iconic Moosewood restaurant in Ithaca, N.Y., is known for its vegetarian cuisine and has been serving food for 40 years. Moosewood is owned by a collective of 19 passionate (mostly self-taught) cooks who run the restaurant and write cookbooks. The latest installment—their 13th collection (five have been nominated for James Beard awards, and two have won)—is a delightful “best of” collection of the restaurant’s most popular dishes, as well as some recipes that haven’t previously been published. The book is straightforward, with small international twists. Hearty, flavorful soups include classics like Moosewood’s famous cream of spinach and French onion, as well as the more exotic West African Peanut Soup and Chilled Cantaloupe-Amaretto Soup. There are fun spins on the traditional burger: Curried Red Lentil Burgers, and Mushroom-Tofu-Pecan Burgers, along with seasonal salad plates. Other chapters include “Beans,” “Frittatas and Pies,” “Casseroles,” “Stuffed Vegetables,” “Tofu,” “Pasta,” and “Fish.” There’s something for everyone in this comprehensive and extremely useful cookbook, which stresses community living and eating meals with style. “When seeking a marker of the changes in the cookbook market over the last 40 years, one need look no further than Ithaca, New York.” – Publishers Weekly

“Well-done, Moosewood! You have become a beloved part of American cultural history and morphed into a truly national institution that most of us know through the cookbooks that have emerged. One after the other, those enticing combinations of delicious recipes and lively prose have borne witness to Moosewood’s most compelling idea: “community” - that harmonious feeling among a group of people that takes place in the kitchen and at the table as we share a commitment to good food and being together. Moosewood Restaurant Favorites will introduce a new generation to a beloved institution and call up happy memories of meals and recipes over the years.”—Nancy Harmon Jenkins, author of The New Mediterranean Diet Cookbook, The Essential Mediterranean and many others

“As any experienced cook knows, extracting the savor of vegetables, completely without meat, presents its own special difficulties. Fortunately, the Moosewood collective has succeeded in meeting those challenges and produced a fine book of direct and simple recipes, each with its own savory twists. This thorough book will delight vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike and will become a cornerstone in any cook’s library.  In short, Moosewood has elevated meatless cooking to the level of great cuisine and artfully showcases vegetarian cooking at its finest.”—James Peterson, author of 15 cookbooks and winner of 7 James Beard Awards

FASCINATING READING THAT WILL MAKE YOU HUNGRY!!!!!!                                                                                                           This cookbook is so much more than a cookbook!  It IS teeming with awesome recipes I want to try... but I also loved how the authors started the book acquainting the reader with Moosewood's history and each recipe has a story of how it was developed...  This all adds up to fascinating reading that will make you hungry!  AND a huge plus for me... none of the recipes seem complicated.  They are doable and delicious!  This cookbook has already become one of my fav recipe books as I'm sure I'll refer to it often!!!!!  I highly recommend it!  5 STARS!

Flavorful pescetarian cookbook without weird ingredients.
This is a mostly vegetarian cookbook; it does have a section for fish but I believe all the other chapters are vegetarian (and feature dairy and eggs). I've purchased several vegetarian cookbooks over the past few years and this one is by far my favorite. It's one that has produced the most flavorful results and uses accessible ingredients (i.e. I think most recipes can be made without a trip to Whole Foods). I've tried about 4-5 recipes since purchasing this a few months ago. I've mostly focused on the bean recipes. I've gotten great responses from folks on the Red Bean and Walnut Spread and just tonight I made the Creole Red Beans which I enjoyed. Both are tasty (although I might cut back on the salt and tomato paste for the creole beans). It also has serving suggestions. Some of the few critiques that I have is that some of the recipes seem a little salt heavy and I wish they had nutritional information. But overall, this book is great and I would highly recommend it. And specifically regarding the Nook version, I haven' had any issues so far.

    Great Collection

I ate at the Moosewood restaurant back when I was in college and I've been hooked ever since.
I have several of their cookbooks and use them often. This collection is a great quick reference to some of their long time favorites.

The book is well thought out and the recipes are easy to follow.
This has helped preplan and make meals ahead of time on many occasions.
It will be one of my "go to" gifts this Holiday Season.

I'm going to begin with a caveat--I did not request this cookboo

I'm going to begin with a caveat--I did not request this cookbook. The publisher sent me this cookbook unsolicited for my review. I don't have any problem with them doing that, just want to be up front that this is not a cookbook I would normally request. I am not a vegetarian or vegan and I don't eat soy products (I don't think they're good for you, but I'm not going to start that argument here). There is a LOT of tofu in this book! There are some interesting recipes and even some things I do myself already (Roasted Cauliflower, Roasted Broccoli, etc), but over all, this really isn't my cup of tea.

The book itself is lovely with its colorful, padded cover, nice photos and heavy duty pages. For someone who loves Moosewood recipes, this book would be a must. I'm giving it four stars based on the quality of the book, and the fact that it would be a great cookbook for a Moosewood Restaurant fan.

I received a copy of this book from St. Martin's Griffin Press for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
