Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
A Selection of Barnes & Noble Recommends
The strangely enthralling true story about the men who clean up the mess that violent death leaves behind…

As every CSI enthusiast knows, murderers often leave gory scenes. But who cleans them up after the forensic wizards are done with their work? To answer the question, journalist Alan Emmins went behind the yellow tape to scope out the work of Crime Scene Cleaners Inc., a nationwide business described in its flyers as "a cleaning maintenance service specializing in the cleanup of homicide, suicide & accidental death." Mop Men offers a fact-filled, tongue-in-cheek profile of Crime Scene Cleaners mogul Neal Smither, a family man who leads a life more double than that of any serial killer.
Publishers Weekly

Who cleans up when a killer leaves a really big bloody mess? In a chatty, tongue-in-cheek profile of Neal Smither, chief of Crime Scene Cleaners Inc., journalist Emmins lets the "Boss Cleaner" speak passionately of how he tackles spills and splotches resulting from the San Francisco Bay area's murders, suicides and other deaths. Emmins delves into the zany character of Smither, a loving family man who puts on a coarsely humorous persona as "protective armor" as he surrounds himself with the dark realm of death, monitoring his multimillion-dollar business in a highly competitive field. Hanging around with Smither means a grisly experience of suicide surrounded by transgender porn, bodies splattered by gunfire or the decayed corpses of those ruined by meth or contagious disease. For a totally gonzo way of looking at the crime scene cleaning business, try this engrossing, wisecracking assessment (of Smither, Emmins writes, "[I]f not actually one of Death's litter, he must be at barest minimum a cousin") of a world we know exists but ignore as we go on about our lives. Boring and Author Rambled on About Things Off Topic

Would have been more interesting if would have stuck to the Crime Scene Cleaners topic and not veered off with the 3 chapters (two of those chapters were of very boring trial transcripts) that were about a trial about one of the murderers. Spent way to much time describing how the author felt about death and describing the author's day of going to get food and coffee. The book was all over the place and there was not a clear focus. Very disappointed in this book.

    Entertaining and Real

I loved that it was not sappy. I work in an ER so it was nice to hear people talk how we talk about certain situations. The writing was a little stale at times, but the writer had some clever insight into an interesting world.

    more from this reviewer

    Mop Men

Mop Men is an interesting and entertainging book to read. A profession like a crime scene cleaner itself draws attention and interest. The author goes and exposes himself to some gruesome crimes, suicides and other forms of death to get an understanding of the workers and the other issues the company will have to face.
Getting an understanding of the profession is very interesting, how do they get such horrendous crime scenes clean?
It is a truly fascinating book to read, it can sometimes be disturbing but it it defiantly worth it.

    I Also Recommend:

    Great book!

This is a very interesting book about a world I had never thought about. Didn't realize there are actually companies that do this sort of thing. If you are into true crime stuff, or are interested in the area of mortuary science, you will probably like this book. I found parts of it funny, and I didn't want it to end. I kept wanting to read more examples of what these crime scene cleaners do. Thought the author was entertaining.
