INTRODUCTION
A decoratively folded napkin will add distinction to every table—whether it is set for an elegant banquet or a child's birthday party. The success of our first book, Decorative Napkin Folding for Beginners (Dover, 23797-4), shows that many people are interested in this easy yet appealing pastime. This new volume has been written to satisfy those people who wish to learn new napkin folds, and for those who want to test their skills with some challenging ones.
The designs in this collection of napkin folds range from very simple to complex. The book begins with the easy folds, then graduates to more challenging folds, finally ending with a lovely yet complex fold. Begin by doing the easy folds to build up confidence and to learn how to follow the diagrams. Each diagram demonstrates two things: what the napkin looks like after the previous fold has been made and what to do next.
Work on a clean, hard surface and press firmly so that the finished fold will be fresh and crisp. While it is desirable to use a linen napkin, any woven cloth or even paper napkins can be used. The secret is that the napkin must be a true square and not limp. If you decide to use cloth, starch it lightly and iron out all the wrinkles before you begin.
Not long ago, napkin folding was an accomplishment mastered by few. Now it is easily within reach of anyone wishing to add something extra to their table. But best of all, it's really fun—try it!
