Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
From Andy Griffith's boyhood story of figuring out how to swim in the shower, to Richmal Crompton's story of a boy allowed free reign in a candy store, to Mark Twain's excerpt from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, the stories and excerpts presented in this novel length book are appropriate for both children and adults. McGough has compiled over two dozen funny chapters and short stories from children's authors and humorists from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, including a short story written by the compiler. The book excerpts are from several well-known children's authors and, for the most part, the excerpts can be taken out of context from the books they originally appeared in, but background information, and a sense of what happens next, is missing from each excerpt. Each chapter is composed of a short story or book excerpt and most are funny, to some extent, but others are only interesting and some are simply unusual. Each chapter also contains a sketch illustrating action taking place within the chapter. 2003, Kingfisher, Ages 8 to 13.
