Meet the Author

Beth Ferrier's grandmother taught her to embroider when Beth was just four, setting her on a lifelong path of needlework. From then on, Beth's hands were always busy - knitting, sewing, weaving, making garments, first for her baby dolls and then for herself. She can’t remember a time when fiber hasn't been a central part of her life. She describes her style as rebellious traditional. A quilter since 1975, she is forever in search of easy and simply elegant solutions to quilting challenges. Everything she designs is geared toward teaching skill-expanding tips and techniques. Beth lives in Saginaw, Michigan, with her husband, Kent, in a farmhouse built before 1860. They have four grown sons, two daughters-in-law, and two grandchildren. You've seen her on Simply Quilts, Kaye's Quilting Friends, and The Quilt Show with Ricky Tims and Alex Anderson. She's written several books.

    More! Hand Applique by Machine

I have used Beth’s methods in the past projects, using her techniques will give you great results. Her books are very well written with lots of details along with picture illustrations. If you have never tried her techniques, you will not have any problems following the steps. This book has an updated section on thread work to enhance your appliqué which is very well written with details on the types of thread to use, machine settings, even needles to use and the bobbin setting. I love her pep talk on touching your bobbin case. She suggests using a thread stand, which I just started using and it really does improve your results. In this book she does talk about how to use wash away appliqué sheets for the appliqué and thread work processes. The projects in this book are very doable for beginners. Beth place little stories at the end of each chapter about stories in her quilting and the last story is about not necessarily finishing a project but to have fun and to me that is what appliqué is all about. Beginners need to get this book and explore appliqué, it isn’t a scary word!!
