Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathleen Karr
Writer and illustrator Brisley dedicated her life to the little girl in a pink-and-white-striped dress, as these stories gleaned from 1929 to 1967 show. In the British tradition of promoting naivete for youngsters, the heroine never changes. Neither does the coming of the modern world taint the pristine innocence of Millie-Molly-Mandy's twixt wars village and its occupants. Molly's adventures with her penpals, or with her rough and ready friend Billy just smoothly continue. Brisley's world becomes a time capsule filled with precious moments never to be repeated. This reprint's duplication of exact typefaces and drawings further reproduces the period atmosphere.
Library Journal
K-Gr 3-Sweet, old-fashioned stories about a little girl and her adventures in her small English town. The 20 selections were culled from 6 books published between 1929 and 1967. Each chapter stands on its own, making this a good choice for reading aloud. However, keep in mind that these simple stories were written in a different time and place. For example, in one chapter, Milly-Molly-Mandy and her friend, Billy Blunt, do good deeds to counter a gang of mischievous boys in the town. The misdeeds of the latter include knocking hats off the heads of passersby and leaving gates open. Eventually, they come around and join up with Milly and Billy's group. Although some readers might consider the stories too bland and mundane, Brisley's characters are consistent and likable. Endpapers have a map of Milly-Molly-Mandy's village. Each chapter has one full-page and several smaller black-and-white drawings, reproduced from the originals. A wholesome choice, particularly for children who have outgrown beginner readers.-Linda L.
