Overview

A browser's book of historical delights
On This Day in History is a fun and fascinating window to the people, places, and events that make up our history, filled with important anniversaries, offbeat holidays, and observances ranging from the momentous to the obscure, the amazing to the amusing.
In this revised and updated edition, Miller and Brown gather information into fourteen major categories, presenting over 8,000 events in three unique formats. Firstly, 10 to 50 events are listed chronologically day—by—day for 366 days (leap day) of the year. Secondly, events are gathered by subject into major categories such as: business, disaster, education, entertainment, ethnic history, music, politics, space, sports, and more. Coincidental similarities and contrasts are presented where they exist. Finally, individual entries are cross—referenced to similar events occurring on other dates.
For those who think of February 8 as just a dreary winter day, here are just some of the exciting happenings that took place on that day:
1516.....Queen Mary I of England was born.
1725.....Tsar Peter the Great of Russia died.
1861.....The Arkansas militia seized the US arsenal at Little Rock.
1926.....Audrey Meadows was born.
1965.....US troops began regular bombing in North Vietnam.
1990.....Soviet leaders agreed to surrender control.
Speakers, trivia mavens, history buffs, writers and even the ordinary curiosity seeker will discover that there isn't a date in the year not marked by one or many significant historical events.
