Children's LiteratureThis is the third "Quiltmaker's Gift" title. The first was a picture story book called The Quiltmaker's Gift by Jeff Brumbeau, the second was Quilts from the Quiltmaker's Gift by Joan Larsen Line. More Quilts presents a very rich visual tapestry and highly detailed, step-by-step instructions for making a variety of beautiful quilts. Scattered across the pages are lovely scenes and quotes from the original picture book. If you are not familiar with that story, these seemingly random insertions can be a bit disorienting. However, for those who loved the original book (and there were many—it was a New York Times bestseller), these infusions may seem like welcome icing on a beautiful cake. It is difficult to determine the appropriate age level for this book. The use of material from the picture book and the photographs of elementary and middle school age children, seem to indicate the author's perspective on the matter. But the scope of the projects included, and the complexity of directions make it more appropriate for teens, and for post-teen "children of all ages." 2003, Orchard Books/Scholastic, Ages 12 to 16.
