About the Author

Biography of Marty Martindale

Marty left Rhode Island on her wedding day for an Air Force wife's life in Waco, Texas. She especially loved Texan homemade pimento cheeses, pinto beans with Cheddar, chopped pecans in tuna salad and all the early southwestern Mexican food offered in 1953. Soon, they were shipped to more intense Mexican food in New Mexico. Here she learned to cook most of the native dishes offered in little New Mexico Extension Service cookbook. Poaching whipped egg whites for Natillas and smoking-hot deep fat for sopapillas were challenges.

Next, it was ten more Air Force years in Biloxi, Mississippi, where fresh shrimp was cheap and the romantic foodways of New Orleans were only an hour away. Here they learned very late evening meals were a nice way of life, so were gumbo, red beans on Mondays and huge muffalettas on return trips from The Big Easy.

After several years in the broadcasting, copywriting and hospitality marketing businesses, Martindale went to Gainesville, FL and majored in social/cultural anthropology.

Her food, travel and cruise writing after school took her to most points in the Caribbean, twice to Brazil, the length of Central America and along the northern Mediterranean. Her cruising experience brought her into contact with knowledge of megaships, panamaxes, elderhostel study cruises, exotic small ships, paddlewheelers and freighters. Trips were contrasted from penthouse cruising with a butler back to her first cruise aboard the Yarmouth Castle, four bunks, bath-down-the-hall, during its "whirlwind" $89 cruise package to the ports of Nassau, Cap Haitian and Santa Domingo. It was 1965, and the Castle sank later the same year.

Marty founded Food Site of the Day in 2001 which is now Foodsite Magazine.com. In 2009 she began writing short fiction, which she calls "Short Orders." Her "Short Orders: Food Stories and Travels" came out in 2011. Her "More Short Orders" debuts in 2013.

She now lives in the Tampa Bay area of Florida.
