This is the start of one of my favorite series. I read the book 2 times the week I bought it, and now have a copy in every format I think!
There are so many books on vampires and werewolves now, because ya know- Stephenie Meyer made it cool... However, Elizabeth takes her own twist on the fictional world of all things mysterious and intriguing. You won't be lacking in a need for characters, but I found myself in love with some very specific characters, such as Dani and Jen. The story offers a theory of things so unreal, so magical, it makes you wonder whats really out there. The writing is put together so well. The book flows from area to area, leaving no mystery of unexplained, and giving me almost that movie picture essence of a book. I have never wanted to go on a cruise, but this book makes me wonder about what things would be like, and how adventures could really be out there! Learning to discover, find abilities you never knew where there, and facing things that one wouldn't have even thought were real... yes, this book is one that will you will eat up for quiet some time. Beware the cruise ship, and all it has to offer---and what the water might be hiding. Well worth your time! And....you will NOT want to wait for Book 2!
Reviewed by Kim Anisi for Readers' Favorite If you are looking for a fantasy story that combines popular themes like werewolves, vampires, wizards, and witches in a different way and is filled with unique characters, then Semester Aboard - More than Magic by Elizabeth Kirke is a book you should put on your 'to read' list. Jen, who is on a moving campus, i.e. a cruise ship, for a semester learns a lot more than just what is on her timetable during that trip. One night she sees a group of other students on deck and something quite unusual happens that baffles Jen. The rest of the group notice her and from then on follow her around to make sure Jen tells nobody about what she saw. While they spend time with her, the strange group of students also notice something special about Jen - that she is more like them than like normal humans. Elizabeth Kirke weaves a story about a variety of mythical beings in Semester Aboard and shows where they clash, where they work together well, where they need each other, and how there is no clear line between which kind of being is good and which not. Thankfully, this book is not one of those trashy vampire/werewolf novels that are cluttering book shelves in book stores these days. It's a delightfully different take on fantasy creatures and the friendships between the different characters are believable and touching. You start liking the characters and you get comfy with the book - it almost feels like you are part of the group and right in the middle of it. You simply do not want it to end! I really hope that there will be a sequel. It would be so very interesting to see what else happens in the lives of all those characters and to read another beautifully written book.
Elizabeth Kirke More than Magic: Semester Aboard More than Magic #1 This book was sat on my kindle for ages before I finally got around to it, but I seriously regret that now! I was completely engrossed from the start, and finished it in less than 2 days. This book kept me turning page after page, very late into the night. The main characters are all incredibly lovable, and I found myself easily becoming attached to them as the story went on. I loved the way that things slowly unfolded, and wasn’t completely overwhelming all at once. The book naturally ended, but I’m glad book 2 is now waiting for me.
More Than Magic: Semester Abroad by Elizabeth Kirke was an awesome YA paranormal story. The story follows Jen, a college student taking an college at sea cruise, and introduces her to the world of magics. Not only does she discover that magic and all different kinds of paranormal creatures exist, she discovers that she is a witch. The story was so interesting and well written. It drew me in and I didn't want to stop reading. I loved how the author was able to incorporate so many different types of supernatural creatures and have them all mesh together. I also loved her descriptions of the different creatures. This is an excellent story and I definitely want more from this author. As soon as I finished this book, I went right on to the next book in the series - Snow Bound.
