Walking with God does not happen merely by obtaining biblical knowledge or having a daily morning quiet time or attending church regularly. It is simpler than that, AND much harder than that, according to Doug Sherman in his book More Than Ordinary: Enjoying Life with God. In his book, he expands on the two main steps of your walking feet: 1) Seeing God more clearly and 2) Responding to Him accordingly. Doug Sherman goes on to say that walking with God is the hardest thing you will ever do, and if anyone told you it was easy, they were wrong. Your loyalty and love for God will be tested as well as your determination and confidence in His leadership. However, you will avoid a lot of self-inflicted pain that people suffer when they go their own way. Life is simpler when only one thing really matters to you, and you can live above your circumstances by relying on His strength and power. Don't judge the book by its title or simple cover. More than Ordinary is full of biblical truth on who God is, what it means to walk with Him, and how to truly practice experiencing His presence through a moment-by-moment walk with Him. It is easy to read yet profound. It is not just theological, but practical too. I wrote six pages of notes of truths that I want to remember from this life-changing book in hopes that reviewing them will help me keep walking closer with God. This book really spoke to my heart and I want to share it with all my friends! I received a complimentary copy of this book from NavPress Publishers as part of their Blogger Review Program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

With a subtitle of 'Enjoying Life With God', I expected 'More Than Ordinary' to be an exciting title and I was not disappointed. Written from the standpoint of a man who has a life in business (with frequent trips away from home), a husband and father with conflicting demands on his time alongside writing and speaker commitments, this is an author well placed to write on making life with God a purposeful and fulfilling adventure. This is a revealing book, telling much about the author's upbringing, encounter with the Saviour and the transformation in his life with God ever present, active, and interested in his daily circumstances. He contrasts this with the lives that others articulate as boring and flavourless, yet responsible and dutiful as God might expect of them. This book urges us to strive for more practical living of Biblical truths and promises, walking with God and with a growing zeal to know Him and make Him known. The writer notes that life is more than ordinariness and relates an exciting exploration of God's design for us, His expectations for us and our expectations of Him, God's plans and direction for us, our responses to His leadership, His work in the world and His guidance in the Bible for the many issues we face in life. He tells of periods of accelerated progress in living life with God and 'seasons of going backwards' to indifference, which many readers might relate to in part. This is a testimony of being focused and captivated, of the writer's own and others response to the challenges of daily life and sharing of that experience. It is a book that relates back to scripture, quotes some of the great writers and commentators on Bible truths and a book that asks for a personal response. Even at over 200 pages, it is very readable and while you may not read it all at once, you will find yourself highlighting parts you enjoyed, found useful or want to share with others. A book I will commend to others as a well written testimony and a challenge to lead a fuller life.

NavPress sent me a free copy of Doug Sherman's book, More Than Ordinary, in exchange for an honest review. Mr. Sherman takes the reader on a roller coaster ride of the ups and downs of his spiritual life. As he shows you these milestones the reader is also given insights into improving their own spiritual well-being. More Than Ordinary encourages deeper communion with God rather than leading an ordinary life solely trying to placate the reader's vision of their God. Living with God can be a fresh adventure beckoning you everyday. God never intended life to be "normal," but rather filled with a tapestry of vibrant colors woven into one's experience of living. I am excited to share my experience with this book. Over the course of my reading I challenged myself to apply the material to my own life. Rather than getting caught up into my day to day routine, I found a greater awareness of God's presence in my life. Sherman advises to invite God into regular conversations as you do whatever and any activity you are engaged in. Live life with Him by your side, instead of in obscurity and loneliness. I realized how much I could see the attributes of God in nature surrounding me or in the kindnesses of strangers. The still, small voice of our Lord will grow a little louder as you become attuned to Him. Anyone who desires a deeper love of our Heavenly Father and a more intense purpose in life would be well-advised to pick a copy up of More Than Ordinary. Who wants to settle for the mundane when they can have a taste of heaven on earth? God wants to share His abundance with everyone out of His plenteous love and grace. It's when we humbly realize what God is capable of giving that we will graciously begin to allow Him to fill our lives for His purpose. Life truly can be More Than Ordinary- extraordinary.
