Overview

Charles Haddon Spurgeon was a British Particular Baptist preacher who became famously known as “The Prince of Preachers”. Spurgeon was the pastor of the New Park Street Chapel in London for 38 years and has remained a big influence today on Christians of many different denominations.

Spurgeon was a key part of the Reformed Baptist Tradition and defended the Church as part of the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith. Spurgeon converted at the age of 16 and just 4 years later became pastor of the New Park Street Chapel. Popular from the start, Spurgeon often gave sermons to audiences of more than 10,000 people. Spurgeon was a prolific writer of sermons, devotionals, commentaries and prayer books, many of which were published. Spurgeon’s “magnum opus” was The Treasury of David which was published over the course of 20 years in the Metropolitan Tabernacle’s periodical, The Sword and the Trowel. During his lifetime Spurgeon started a charity organization and founded a pastor’s college, which was renamed Spurgeon’s College after his death.

I read this devotional book years ago, and when on vacation this summer, I downloaded the ebook onto my Nook to read while away. Though the daily entries are not what you might call easy reading, they are spiritually and intellectually stimulating, as well as informative, comforting and convicting. Each day of the year has a morning reading and an evening reading - perfect way to start and end each day! Included with the readings are bible verses that go along with the little message of the day. It is such a comfort to read these writings of long, long ago and realize Christians faced the same stresses and problems then as we do now, and that the same Lord is in control of them all - and continues to be ready and willing to help us.

This is an amazing book; unfortunately, this particular version cuts out a bit. I have read a few entries that cut out mid-sentence and I found out (through checking online) that there is quite a bit to go until the end of the entry. Most of the entries are complete, but it is frustrating to be reading and enjoying only to have it cut off and realize that in order to finish, you need to find another source.

a timeless message of encouragement, that gives the child of God a much needed foretaste of the feast to come in the heavenly kingdom.

Spurgeon's M&E readings provoke much food for thought. The writing style reflects the era of the author but this does not prevent the message from getting across. Each reading takes a few minutes but can be reflected on and taken further.
