Morning Becomes Eclectic: Selected On-Air Performances

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David Sprague
Once upon a time, radio was full of surprises. And while those days are largely gone, there are still a few outposts of innovation -- like KCRW, the Santa Monica, California-based station that's home to the morning show that provides both the name and the material for this album of live-in-the-studio performances. Marquee artists such as Beck and PJ Harvey share space with like-minded lesser lights, a blend that keeps things fresher than an all-hits, all-the-time compilation might. The songs that are the most familiar -- Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me" and Ednaswap's "Torn" the original version of the Natalie Imbruglia hit -- sound a bit out of place amid more ...

The songs that are the most familiar -- Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me" and Ednaswap's "Torn" the original version of the Natalie Imbruglia hit -- sound a bit out of place amid more off-kilter tracks by Morcheeba and Mercury Rev, whose "Opus 40" is every bit as transportive in this stripped down form as it is on DESERTER'S SONGS. While out-and-out head-turners are few -- aside from folkie John Martyn's alchemization of Portishead's "Glory Box" -- there's nary a dull moment to be had here. And when's the last time you associated that thought with radio?
All Music Guide - Denise Sullivan
Easing the listener in with Angelique Kidjo's A Capella "Blewu" and easing her out with Pink Martini's twisted take on "Que Sera Sera" 16 tracks later, you can't say the folks who put together this best-of from the Los Angeles public radio station's studio weren't thinking. However the question remains: what were they thinking? This is the series formerly known as Rare on Air which featured tracks by artists with far more name recognition than this bunch -- though Lyle Lovett and PJ Harvey are the star turns here that will resonate with the target adult hipster audience. Nonetheless, John Martyn's epic "Glory Box," Joe Henry's "Monkey" superior to his clinical album version and Beth Orton's acoustic "Sugar Boy" are keepers.
