Overview

Featuring pop-ups, pull-tabs, and lift-the-flaps, unusually vivid illustrations of jungle creatures animate every page of this color-filled book. Morning has arrived in the jungle, and one by one, the animals are waking up. With the shining sun, a happy monkey swings back and forth by his tail in a tree. An elephant shakes its big trunk, and with the pull of a tab, a snake slithers out from behind a rock. The second half of this charming book depicts night descending in the jungle. Now it's time for the animals to sleep. Kids can turn a wheel at one page's edge to make a pair of hippos bob and float in a pool, as they doze off to sleep. In addition to movable parts, many of the pictures have textured sections for toddlers to touch—for instance, a lion's furry mane and a parrot's feathery wing. Very young children will adore this book for its charming pictures, its fascinating actions, and most of all for its many delightful animals. (Ages 3-6)

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In Morning in the Jungle by Teresa Imperato, illus. by Mercedes McDonald, pop-ups, pull-tabs, flaps and more show wild animals first awakening and later preparing for bed. Fuzzy insets enhance a lion's mane and sleeping hippos bob up and down in a river when readers turn a wheel. Imperato provides simple, rhymed stanzas: "What happens in the darkness/ of the jungle at night?/ Mama zebra tucks baby in nice and tight." (Aug.) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
