Morning Light

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - John Bush
The Locust vocal album Morning Light includes nine gorgeous pop songs sprinkled with four short tracks of electronic atmosphere. Van Hoen is at his best here, creating pleasantly distorted, effervescent electro-pop productions for vocalists including Holli Ashton, Wendy Roberts, and Craig Bethell. Moving from folk-pop to orchestral electro to hi-NRG trance occasionally in the same song, Van Hoen frames his singers with sympathetic productions. It's a wonder that his productions cover so much territory and still make for any kind of pop songs, much less supremely effective ones, but Morning Light works throughout. GIRLS WITH FAIRYTALE DREAMS

LOCUST.the brainchild of Londoner Mark van Hoen, make tremendous music, very ambient, chock full of samples and offering plenty of variety. On a previous album ''Truth is born of arguments'',Virginia Astley was namechecked even though all she did was brew the coffee!!!Here's an album where monotony is turned into a fine art, short phrases hammered into submission and to a very pleasing effect ''Morning Light'' though sees this flute playing nymph at her most flautistic on a short instrumental called ''Shadowplay''. While Locust albums are mainly instrumental this one is a vocal set, with a number of guests such as Neil Halstead of the Mojave 3 and Zoe Niblett of JBK One of her songs could be about Virginia herself:The girl with the fairy tale dream'',available as a single with 4 different mixes. I discovered Locust because my favourite artiste determines what I collect and as I enjoyed this so much I acquired 2 other Locust albums ...which are not that easy to find. This particular one comes in 2 different varieties, the 2nd with an added ''mystery track''. Maybe next time round Virginia will add her angelic tones to one of van Hoen's songs
