Overview

In 1957, Harper published its first I Can Read title, Little Bear, written by Else Holmelund Minarik and illustrated by Maurice Sendak. Large type, simple vocabulary, chapter-like divisions, and decorative pictures made Little Bear perfect for emerging readers—they could read the story comfortably and not feel overwhelmed by the text. Following suit came such classics as Peggy Parish's Amelia Bedelia series, Lillian Hoban's books about Arthur the monkey, and Syd Hoff's popular Danny and the Dinosaur. Many books in this series are special in the depth of emotion evoked - Little Bear, the Frog and Toad books by Arnold Lobel, and Daniel's Duck by Clyde Bulla, to name a few - and all are enjoyed by children of all ages. When is a cow not a cow? When it's a moose! At least, Morris the moose says the cow is a moose. After all, she has four legs, a tail, and things on her head, just like he does. When the cow insists she is not a moose, Morris consults a deer. But the deer says Morris and the cow are both deer - after all, they both have four legs, a tail, and things on their heads, just like he does…Oh dear! Or should I say, Oh deer!

In this story Morris encounters what he considers to be a funny-looking moose. Cow insists that she is a cow but since she has ``four legs and a tail and things on her head,'' Morris concludes that she is a moose like him. Both Morris and the cow encounter similar difficulty when they attempt to have a deer arbitrate their dispute. Finally when the three of them chance to take a drink of water from a stream, Morris and the deer realize that they have been mistaken. Wanting the last word, Morris brings a concluding bit of humor to the tale when he declares that he did not make a mistake, ``I made a MOOSEtake!'' Wiseman's illustrations are in a style similar to those in the other ``Morris'' titles. The images are straightforward and simple with few details. Browns and yellows dominate the pictures. Based on a 1959 book, this edition has been re-illustrated and adapted to the series format.     MORRIS is a SUPER HELPFUL MOOSE!!!

    This is a wonderful book with THREE stories of the adventures of Morris the Moose! I bought this on a whim on the way home from work today HOPING my youngest son would take an interest and read SOME of it as he has had a bit of trouble with his reading in school. HE DEVOURED THE ENTIRE BOOK IN JUST A COUPLE OF HOURS!! 166 pages of WONDERFUL READING!!!!!! I will be getting him EVERY "Morris the Moose" book I can find! BTW- He can't wait to take it to school tommorow to share with his class! I am one very happy and proud father! THANKS MORRIS!!! :-D
