Editorial Reviews

Rodrigue G. Barakat
This is a compact, up-to-date pharmacology reference with an accent for the dental practitioner. The purpose is to provide rapid access to essential drug information and to facilitate completion of the medical history review and patient evaluation. The book is oriented towards practicing dentists, students, and residents in all fields of dentistry. The majority is composed of an alphabetical index containing the basic information drugs. The description of each medicine includes the pronunciation, drug class, mechanism of action, usage, dosage and route of administration, available forms, side effects/adverse reactions, contraindications, precautions of use, pharmacokinetics, interactions of concern for dentistry, and other dental considerations. Useful appendixes are included, such as the one listing drugs causing xerostomia, one for drugs affecting taste, a controlled substance chart, a list and description of combined products, and also a listing of herbal and non-herbal remedies. This latest appendix is a new and welcome addition in this fifth edition. The list of references has been updated since the fourth edition but is still very similar. This new edition is a good update of the previous version. The authors used similar format which was very successful previously. The colors in the text make locating the information easier. The book is a good, compact, quick reference. This new version is more Canadian friendly with the addition of the Canadian generic names. The addition of alternative and herbal medicine is very good since more and more patients are leaning towards alternative therapies. Finally, I think that this edition is presented with many great improvements.
Eliakum Reinert
This important new book deals with drug information for dental professionals. The main section of the book is an alphabetical formulary of more than 1,000 drugs. Appendixes complete the information needed about drugs prescribed for dental patients. The purpose is to provide a concise and convenient resource on basic drug information relevant to medical history review in dental patient evaluation and treatment planning. The book largely meets its overall important objectives. This book is targeted for chairside use by dentists (specialists, general practitioners, and students), dental hygienists, and dental auxiliaries. The authors are recognized experts in the fields of drugs and dentistry. In addition to basic data, each drug monograph includes information regarding side effects, drug interactions, and dental considerations for treating a patient taking a given drug. This is a handy book, small enough to be carried anywhere, yet the type is clear and big enough to make easy reading. A very useful and user-friendly index and a reasonable list of references are included. This handy book offers important practical information needed by all members of the dental profession on a daily basis.

Preface

Mosby's Dental Drug Reference is designed to be used chairside in the dental office and by the student or resident as a quick, concise drug reference resource. Its purpose is to assist in the rapid identification of drugs patients may be taking as they present for dental care. The easy-to-use design provides rapid access to essential drug information to facilitate completion of the medical history review and patient evaluation.

This book is not intended to be a comprehensive drug compendium nor to make specific recommendations about selecting and prescribing dental drugs. It contains concise and easy-to-read "micro" drug monographs with basic information about each drug.

Selected herbal and nonherbal remedies have been placed in a special section to aid the dental practitioner in identifying dental implications of these products. Drugs are presented alphabetically by generic name in a succinctly ordered and standardized format with pertinent drug information for the dentist, dental hygienist, or dental assistant. A user-friendly cross index is the key to using the book for both brand and generic name identification. A second index based on a therapeutic and pharmacologic classification can also be used to identify the location of drug monographs, but in addition, will aid in identifying drugs when the patient cannot recall the name or spelling of a drug being taken. This index also groups drugs by classes or use so the reader can easily identify other drugs within a given class or application. Information is provided on more than 1600 drug products, including the most recently approved drugs and new drug products through 1999. Special features of this book arean emphasis on drug interactions of dental interest and the highlighting of oral side effects. The dental considerations section includes information that will be useful in developing patient management strategies. Useful fact tables are located on the inside covers and in the appendixes, with information about dose calculations. This volume also contains the 1997 ADA drug and dose recommendations for antibiotic prophylaxis for patients at risk for bacterial endocarditis and for those patients with prosthetic joints. We have also revised the tables listing drugs that can alter salivary flow and affect taste in some manner.
