Editorial Reviews

Rosemary E.S. Mortimer
This easy-to-read drug reference appears to be quite complete and accurate. The print is large enough that one is able to read without difficulty. Having pictures of the medications is helpful for both practitioners and clients as many of the current medications names are so similar and difficult to pronounce. Pharmacology is changing so quickly it is helpful to have a text that is easy to read and to use. The CD-ROM and information on how to link into the Web sites are both useful and practical for new practitioners who are very computer savvy. New students and those who have not practiced in awhile will find the pictures and information on how to give injections very helpful. This is also a wonderful teaching tool for learning to use and understanding the rationale of using different sites for injections. This can also be utilized as we do client/family teaching so that our clients may be more self sufficient and able to return home sooner. The addition of herbal remedies is extremely useful as so many of our clients are taking herbal and over-the-counter remedies. This addition will help those of use in practice determine if the medications we are administering are likely to have unintended side effects because of interactions with these substances. This is an area of medicine about which few Western practitioners have a lot of practical experience or knowledge. Having the icons is very helpful for providers and students to distinguish potential interactions and problematic interactions. The addition of nursing diagnoses in the book is an aid for new students and those who are utilizing nursing diagnosis on their units. This will be a way for practitioners to document andeventually be able to rationalize their service requirements. The wording in the text seems easier for students and staff members than a number of the other drug texts on the market. This will help a nurse who is uncomfortable using some texts to utilize this one. Continuing to include medications that are no longer covered in the PDR is also helpful for all providers.
