Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Steven K. Hamick, BIS, RCP, RRT (William Beaumont Hospitals)
Description: As denoted by the title, this is the second edition of a drug reference for health professionals. It updates the 2006 edition.
Purpose: Designed as an easy-to-use source of current drug information, it's geared specifically for healthcare professionals. Given the increasing number of medications, dosages, and routes of administration, this revision is needed. The authors meet their objectives in creating a comprehensive, no-nonsense drug reference.
Audience: It is written for a wide spectrum of healthcare providers and, given the list of consultants, contributors, and reviewers, the authors are experts in their respective fields.
Features: A short introduction begins the book, which then segues into the individual drug monographs, listed alphabetically by generic name. Each entry contains generic and brand name, drug classification, pregnancy risk, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, availability (capsule, solution, etc.), indication/dosages, contraindications, interactions, effects on laboratory and test results, IV compatibilities/incompatibilities, side effects, serious reactions, and precautions/considerations. When applicable, controlled substance schedule or other-the-counter (OTC) status information is provided. Several appendixes present general anesthetics, an English-to-Spanish drug phrase translator, and clinical chemistry information. A glossary and index end the book. The information is more than satisfactorily complete.
Assessment: This is an excellent drug reference for health professionals of all disciplines. Given the continuous introduction of new medications, new applications, dosage forms, and different routes of administration for existing medications, it is hoped the authors continue to produce future editions.
