Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Rahmat M Talukder, PhD (Pharmaceu, BS in Pharmacy(West Coast University School of Pharmacy)
Description: This is the fourth edition of a handbook that offers extensive information on 300 herbal and natural supplements. Each monograph includes the common and scientific names, origin, uses, contraindications, and adverse effects.
Purpose: The objective is to provide pertinent information on alternative medicines. More and more people are using alternative medicines, so readily available information is helpful to both consumers and healthcare professionals. In this respect this book should be very useful.
Audience: Anyone interested in alternative medicine will find this book an excellent reference. Linda Skidmore-Roth has published a number of books for nursing students. Among the consultants, Catherine Ulbricht is the founder and editor of the Natural Standard Research.
Features: Each monograph includes the common and scientific names, origins, uses, actions, contraindications, adverse effects, pharmacology, and client considerations with appropriate references. A complete reference list appears at the end of the book. All the monographs use a consistent format, which is helpful for readers. Icons are used where necessary to draw readers' attention. Appendixes include important information on herbal resources, herb-drug interactions, and herbal use in pediatrics. The interaction table is presented based on the drug class. Some of the references are not as strong as they could be. Articles published in journals with high impact factors are considered reliable sources.
Assessment: This compilation of facts on 300 herbal and natural supplements will be helpful to those who are interested in the use of alternative medicine. Although the book has an extensive list of references, stronger sources could have been used.
From the Publisher
"Skidmore-Roth has put together a revised, concise and comprehensive evidence-based guide…The sense of history and traditional use of the herbs makes for interesting reading, but this book’s real value lies in its accessibility. This is a useful resource for clinicians looking to advise or check compatibility with other treatments." Nursing Standard, October 2009

    Great Resource

I'm a Home Health Nurse and purchased the book for myself and for my patients. With the increase in traditional and eastern medicine I needed a resource to help myself and patients understand the benefits, as well as, the contraindications when using herbs and supplements. The book provides the dosages and frequency which is often missing from other books I've looked at.

    (SPELLING CORRECTED) Groundbreaking spontaneous classic!

Does what it says. Separates essential oil from snake oil with brilliant bias-free research. Indispensable for care providers. An easy '10'.
