Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Lisa M. Kelley, RN, MS (Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing)
Description: This practical nursing drug reference is designed to promote maximum utility and applicability for nurses providing hands-on patient care. The nursing process format is followed.
Purpose: In the preface, the author states that she intends for the book to be easy to use and in nursing process format. I feel the individual drug listings provide the nurse with the clear, concrete information necessary to assess the safety and efficacy of patient medication.
Audience: The author intends this book to be used by all nurses. I feel it will be most useful for nurses who work in settings where there is ongoing contact and monitoring of patients, and would be an excellent reference for nursing students in their clinical rotations. The author's credibility as an authority on the subject matter is difficult to determine as little biographical information is provided.
Features: With this book the author attempts to cover nursing drug information in nursing process format. She demonstrates strong clinical and patient teaching information. The medical diagnoses listed in the index in italicized capital letters provide another way to access drug information. Information on herbal supplements is both timely and useful. Missing are elderly and pediatric considerations for each medication. I am also unsure of the usefulness of a "rarely used drug" appendix.
Assessment: This book is a significant contribution to nursing drug references with the nursing process perspective and exceptional practicality of usage. I feel that the missing categories of elderly and pediatric considerations following each entry are, however, important omissions that should be included.
