Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Brian Marshall, O.D.(Marshall Family Eye Care)
Description: This handy reference book contains detailed information about current drugs used routinely by eye care professionals as well as the top 100 drugs commonly prescribed overall.
Purpose: This is a comprehensive source for quickly locating in-depth drug information that enables practitioners to make sound therapeutic decisions. Because of the complexity of current drug actions as well as the large number of different drugs on the market, this book is a very worthy addition to the field.
Audience: Anyone who requires detailed ophthalmic drug information will find this book indispensable. This includes eye care professionals, students, residents, and pharmacists. The author and reviewers are all well known and respected authorities in the field.
Features: Each drug listing is displayed in a standardized format that presents pertinent information, including clinical pharmacology, available forms, indications and dosages, contraindications, interactions, diagnostic test effects, side effects, and serious reactions. Herbal interactions are included under interactions. This is an important addition considering that many people have now added various herb supplements to their diet, which can have an impact on ocular or systemic drug actions. The most common herbs and natural supplements are also listed at the end of the book in one of the several helpful appendix sections.
Assessment: There are several books currently on the market that provide the same information. What sets this apart from the rest is that it has convenient alphabetical tabs in the margins allowing the user to quickly find any drug listed alphabetically. Also, its small size makes it very easy to carry and use on the go. It does not replace the PDR, but provides drug specific information about all ocular medications conveniently laid out in one easy to use and carry source.
