Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Carol Ann Siem, MSN (University of Missouri-Columbia)
Description: This package, which includes the textbook and Mosby's Nursing Assistant Video Skills: Student Online Version 3.0, focuses on nurse assistants and their impact on the quality of life of residents in long term care facilities. Each task is discussed in terms of its effect on the patient's quality of life before getting to the actual procedure.
Purpose: The purpose is to prepare students to function as nursing assistants. As our population continues to age at a rapid pace, well-trained, competent nurse assistants are desperately needed. This book looks at the tasks of nursing assistants, but it also looks at the impact that their job has on residents.
Audience: It is intended for nurse assistants both for educational purposes and as a resource. The two authors have extensive backgrounds in geriatrics and curriculum development.
Features: The book describes the role of the nurse assistant in long term care and the importance of teamwork and good communication. Objectives are clearly stated for each chapter and procedures are detailed in both the book and the included CD-ROM, which makes it easy to copy. The book includes many color illustrations and color-coded boxes highlighting specific points. It explains how a particular skill impacts different cultures, describes particular needs with dementia residents, and covers OBRA highlights. Chapters end with review questions which are answered in the back of the book. Some of the pictures and information are outdated. For example, the discussion of bed making includes mattress pads and plastic draw sheets for a surgical bed that are not commonly used. The discussion of restraint alternatives and "safe" restraint use focuses more on the application of restraints than on restraint alternatives. There is no discussion of side rail alternatives despite the fact that they also have restraining properties.
Assessment: Overall, this book offers unique approaches to the education of nurse assistants. The difficulty with any manual is that once it is published there will always be changes in techniques or approaches. Taking that into consideration, this book provides a well-rounded educational approach to the training of future caregivers.
