Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 1-3--Skillfully written in a storytelling cadence especially suited to reading aloud, this text follows Moses from his birth and his mother's desperate act to save him from the Pharaoh's soldiers, his upbringing as an Egyptian prince, his flight to Midian after killing an overseer, his encounter with Yahweh in the burning bush, his return to Egypt to plead for his people's release, and the plagues, ending just as the Israelites leave the Nile valley for the Promised Land. Although incomplete Aaron is not even mentioned, the narrative covers the essence of the Biblical account well. Unusual, dynamic and expressive full- and quarter-page illustrations done in sand-swept earth tones add drama and energy to the presentation. A CD narrated by Danny Glover, with music by The Sounds of Blackness, accompanies the book. Miriam Chaikin's Exodus Holiday, 1987, masterfully illustrated by Charles Mikolaycak, covers much more of Moses's life, ending with the building of the ark and the tabernacle, as does Leonard Everett Fisher's powerful Moses Holiday, 1995, which ends with his death.--Patricia Pearl Dole, formerly at First Presbyterian School, Martinsville, VA
