Overview

Usually associated with splendid Renaissance chateaux and historical monuments, the Loire valley is in fact a place of much greater variety and interest than the image of popular perception. The river itself is the longest in France and passes through a succession of landscapes, many of them of a richness that proves this is truly "the garden of France."

Traveling west, Hugh Palmer takes us first to the villages around Orleans, then to the communities near Blois and Tours where, it is said, the purest French is spoken. Here begin the villages with the great chateaux such as Chambord and Azay-le-Rideau, reached by long roads lined with tall poplars or lying beside the banks of one of the many tributaries that flow into the main river at this point. The slopes here are frequently vine-clad, producing the delicious white wines that make such a fine accompaniment to the traditional fish cuisine of the region. Finally, we arrive at the villages around Angers and Nantes, where willow-lined rivers divide a landscape of quiet opulence, and green fields alternate with market gardens growing vegetables, flowers and fruit.

Over thirty villages of the valley of the Loire and the surrounding countryside are described and stunningly photographed in this book, which is completed by two special sections. As with all the volumes in The Most Beautiful Villages series, there are appendices listing the most important local sites, markets, hotels and restaurants.

Hugh Palmer is one of the leading British photographers of architecture and gardens. He has contributed to numerous books, notably Garden Ornament, The Formal Garden and volumes on Provence, Tuscany, the Dordogne, Greece, Burgundy, Brittany and England in The Most Beautiful Villages series. He is currently working on The Most Beautiful Villages of Normandy, both as photographer and author. James Bentley was a distinguished travel writer who specialized in Italy and France. He is the author of the volumes on Tuscany, the Dordogne, Burgundy, England and Brittany in The Most Beautiful Villages series. Sadly, James Bentley died during the early stages of preparation of the present book.
