Overview

The all-in-one trip planner and travel guide-now totally revised and updated-will steer you down the most scenic road every time. From Florida's Road to Flamingo to Hawaii's Oahu Coastal Loop . . . from British Columbia's Sea to Sky Highway to Cape Cod's Sandy Shores . . . each featured road trip is pictured in stunning full color and described in vivid text, keyed to an easy-to-follow newly revised map. Whether you choose a drive in a far corner of the continent or a back road in your own state, this book is your ticket to North America's most beautiful byways.

Drives are grouped in four pictured-packed sections-Western, Mountain, Central, and Eastern states and provinces-and are accompanied by detailed, easy-to-use maps. New drives featuring some of Canada's most stunning destinations have been added. As a bonus, handy Trip Tip sidebars include:

  • Mileage
  • best season to travel
  • nearby attractions
  • special events
  • "learn more" contact information including website addresses
A special feature called Star Routes offers thumbnail sketches of shorter but especially scenic roads located in the same region as the main tours. Additional boxes highlight distinctive characteristics of the areas, including local plants, animals, customs, foods, and a variety of historical events.

Whether on the road or in the comfort of your easy chair, this newly revised Reader's Digest travel guide will be a welcome companion.

Editorial Reviews

RV Directions (rvdirections.info)
"Often times when we are on a cross-country trip, we use the interstate highway system for most of the trip. Unfortunately, this causes us to miss out on a lot of the scenic beauty that America offers. There is a book published by Readers Digest entitled The Most Scenic Drives in America that can be used to deal with this problem. This book contains 120 scenic drives throughout the entire country."
Hotel Miami Beach (hotelmiamibeach.org)
"A one-of-a-kind trip planner, a superb on-the-road reference, and an album of 400 photographs. From the Atlantic to the Pacific, here are 120 outstanding drives that show the magnificence of America-each with detailed, easy-to-follow maps. Taking a drive in the country has been popular since horse-and-buggy days. But while the road trip itch is as strong as ever, scenic drives get scarcer year by year. The answer is a collection of the 120 loveliest drives in the U.S., providing maps and tours (with sites along the way itemized and lovingly described), trip length, when to go, nearby attractions, and local information sources."
The Oregonian
"Obviously, some drives are created more equal than others. But Reader's Digest does show that scenic beauty is endemic to every part of the country. Even if you can't hit the road and drive them all, this updated version...uses gorgeous color photos to show you what you could see if you did. And each drive is accompanied by a helpful map to let your imagination guide you along the way."

    Used on 2 road trips

My husband and I strongly recommend this book for road trips across America. We used it in 2004 on a 6 week road trip and last summer on an 8 week road trip. We actually plan our itinerary around it. I would not travel the States without it.

    Inspired to Travel

This book is laid out so that it is easy to plan a trip. The pictures and information are very helpful. If you know the general area you want to see, it has sections for this and what I like the best is that it shows specific highways and routes to take. You can combine various parts for a whole trip. It motivates to travel and helps take the guesswork out of knowing where to go and what to do...a great travel help!

    Very Nice Reference Book

If you like touring the countryside in your car, this is a must have book. Even when planning a vacation to a particular location, i will refer to this book before going to find some 'side trips'.
