About the Author

Alexei Maximovich Peshkov (1868-1936), known as Maxim Gorky, was a Russian and Soviet author who wrote primarily against the tsars prior to the Russian Revolution. Gorky's works primarily dealt with the lives of people in the lowest strata and on the margins of Russian society; by 1899 he openly identified with the communist ideals of the would-be revolutionaries in Russia.
