Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Fujikawa's signature line drawings alternate with full color pictures of cherubic children in pastoral settings. All the familiar rhymes are here, from "Pat-A-Cake" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb" to "Hey Diddle Diddle" and "Little Jack Horner." Less familiar but with equally infectious rhymes is "Mary Had a Pretty Bird," "Bye Baby Bunting" and that gentle ode to a kitten, "Kindness" ("I love little pussy, her coat is so warm…"). An index of first lines gives easy access to the more than 300 verses. These rhymes, riddles, songs, and limericks should be the staple of every child's first language experience. Happily back in print, this treasury is a must for every baby's bookshelf and is a perfect gift to welcome baby. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey

    Stands the test of time

This is the ultimate book for teaching children right from wrong and rhyme and reason. I still have my old copy from when I was young and now my kids read it carefully (so it doesn't fall apart). That's the great thing about this book, it reads as if it's new no matter how old and worn it gets.

    Charmingly multi-ethnic

I am thrilled that this is back in print, because it is unique among Mother Goose collections in showing children of various ethnic backgrounds. Children today need to be comfortable in a rainbow world. Another plus is that there is a picture for every poem. How else can preliterate children find their favorites?!. Really a classic that should be in every child's library.

    Great kids book

I recently purchased "Mother Goose." I was looking for a baby shower gift for one of my very best friends. I think we sould keep reading the Mother Goose rhymes and stories as a tradition for even the newest generations. I read several of the rhymes while I was in the store and it reminded me of when my mother read them to me as a child. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for timeless stories to read and share with their children or grandchildren or to anyone looking for a piece of their own childhood. Great gift idea!

This was my favorite book as a child and I was thrilled to be able to share it with my grandchild. I hope she gets as much pleasure from her own copy as I did mine.

This is a wonderful rendition of the clasic "Mother Goose" nursery rhymes and well worth sharing with another generation.

    A Most Treasured Book

I was three when this book was published in 1968. I still have my original copy with taped binding and teethmarks in the hardcover. I recall as a child being virtually transported by the illustrations and staring at small picture details in fascination. I recited the poems aloud and committed them to memory. The book was utterly spellbinding then to me and now to my own children. The only Mother Goose edition one should own.

    Where is it?

I had this book as a child and bought it a couple of years ago for a friend when she had her baby. She was so excited because it was also the Mother Goose that had been read to her as a child. Since then, I cannot find it anywhere. Is it out of print? If it is, what a shame.

    Must Have From My Childhood

I was so excited when I found this edition of this book. My sister and I both had a copy of this when we were young. The illustrations are memorable and of course Mother Goose is timeless. I recently purchased this for my son and niece. A great volume for any child and also makes a great heirloom book to pass for generations. Also the binding of this volume is beautiful and there are other books by the same author to make a set which I also bought.

    Beautiful Traditional Mother Goose

This is one of the nicest Mother Goose Books I have seen. I was looking to give a really beautiful and complete collection of Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes to my daughter for her First Birthday and this is the book I selected. I searched through the various Mother Goose books in the store and online I was very impressed this book contained about 300 nursery rhymes and each of the rhymes has an illustration. The color illustrations are absolutely gorgeous; however, every other page is black and white. Although the black and white pictures are not as vivid or as lovely as the color pictures, they are still nice. The flow of book is nice and the black and white pages do actually transition well with the book. The most comparable book is the "Real Mother Goose" or the "Original Mother Goose" illustrated by Blanche Fisher Wright; however, those books does not have nearly as nice of illustrations as this version by Gyo Fujikawa. For instance, Gyo Fujikawa has a beautiful illustration for "Little Bo Peep", which the other version does not. The binding cover on this book is also very nice. It has a very classic feel to it and this book will withstand the test of time. Every child should have a complete collection of Mother Goose nursery rhymes and this version is one I would highly recommend. This is a children's literary classic that every child should have access too.
