Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverley Fahey
Preschool and Kindergarten teachers will eagerly embrace this lively and energetic compilation of twenty familiar Mother Goose rhymes. Hillenbrand infuses his mixed media illustrations with charm and wit placing the characters firmly in a pastoral setting. Each rhyme, in a rebus format, is given center stage and within each picture the rebus symbols are identified. In some instances visually astute children will quickly see clues to the next rhyme. In Little Blue Boy, a black hen is seen atop the haystack, a foreshadowing of the rhyme to follow—The Black Hen. There is plenty of whimsy within the illustrations. Kids will giggle to see Humpty Dumpty carted away in the King's Men ambulance and at King Cole's fiddlers who just happen to be the Three Blind Mice. Visually this packs a wallop as readers will linger over the pages to point out all the details and teachers will find it not only an excellent choice to teach Mother Goose rhymes but also as a boon to reading readiness. PreS-Gr 1—Perfect for sharing in storytimes or classrooms, this oversize picture book presents 20 rhymes in a rebus format. Each one is accompanied by a mixed-media illustration that contains larger, labeled versions of the characters or objects that appear in the rebus pictures. Some of the lesser-known objects have a brief explanation; for example, "crown" is defined as "another word for top of head." Most of the rhymes are well known, though a few may be new to children ("The Black Hen," "The Little Bird"). Hillenbrand's colorful artwork is bold and inviting, and his characters, engaging and expressive. The pictures lead the way through the book, giving readers a clue about what's to come. On the opening spread, the cat and the fiddle tag along as Mother Goose rides her gander, then the cat takes center stage in "Hey, Diddle, Diddle" on the next page, while Jack and Jill run to a well in the background. The clues continue throughout, supporting beginning readers and adding yet another guessing-game element to participative reading.—Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, MD
Kirkus Reviews

Hillenbrand introduces the idea of rebuses to newly emergent readers with a gathering of likely-to-be-familiar Mother Goose rhymes—from "Hey diddle, diddle, / the [cat] and the [fiddle]" to "Twinkle, twinkle, little [star]." To make the translations ultra-easy, he provides literal visual interpretations for each rhyme in good-humored cartoon scenes featuring smiling people or animals, generally in country dress and settings. (He moderates verisimilitude for the audience appropriately: Jill's fallen male companion and Humpty Dumpty are unhappy after their accidents but plainly not grievously injured.) He even labels the relevant figures, all of whom or which are larger versions of the rebuses: "cake," "baker's man" and "baby," for instance, or "hill," "pail," "water" and "crown (another word for top of head)." As a technique for promoting visual and verbal literacy at once this game has a good track record, and young audiences put off by the crudely illustrated likes of Blanche Fisher Wright'sReal Mother Goose Picture Word Rhymes(1916, 1987) or the much olderMother Goose in Hieroglyphics (1849, 1973) will both enjoy and benefit from this shorter but more child-friendly outing.(Nursery rhymes. 3-5)
