Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Originally published in 1966, Mother Mother I Feel Sick Send for the Doctor Quick Quick Quick by Remy Charlip and Burton Supree, has been re-illustrated by Charlip, with silhouette paper cut-outs against a background of Victorian wallpaper. This visual treatment gives the story about a beach ball-shaped boy with a stomach ache a nostalgic look sophisticated enough to lure modern readers. As the doctor removes each item from the boy's stomach (a parasol, a bicycle, etc.), they appear in full color on the opposite spread, and the boy gradually returns to his natural size and shape. Children's Literature
When children are at home and fretting with a slight illness, a silly book can be a great cure. Remy Charlip and Burton Supree have a wild take on a traditional rhyme in Mother Mother I Feel Sick Send for the Doctor Quick Quick Quick. In a rollicking set of rhymes and circumstances, a turn of the century doctor speeds to the side of boy with a green face, stomach ache, and distended belly. The doctor pulls from the boy's rounded belly a bizarre collection of items including: balls, an entire birthday cake, tea in a pot, galoshes, and even a bicycle. The boy leaves with a flat tummy and improved health...but what's this? The doctor's missing his hat. Charlip is a genius at wordplay and humor. Part of this book's fun comes from its illustrations. It's all shown in shadow against backgrounds inspired by vintage wallpapers. The authors have included simple directions so that families can turn this frolic of word and image into a shadow play! 2001, Tricycle Press,

    I Also Recommend:

I have finally found my favorite book that I enjoyed in my childhood!

When I talk to my students about memorable books, I always mention this one. It has been out of print for a long time, so I gave up trying to find a copy. I was so excited to see that it has been reprinted. I wondered what made this story so memorable, and now I realize that the beautiful print, colors, and illustrations made this a part of my childhood memories. The clever rhymes and the Victorian theme are so catchy. This is truly a lovely book that can be enjoyed by all generations of readers.

Wow !!! I never saw so many wide eyes as I read aloud

Age 8, I remember my mother bringing in this book one day as I lay in bed sick from school. I was dazzled by this book. This boy was surely sicker than myself and what amazing things came from his belly. I felt so much better after reading the book. I took the book to school for show and tell. As I read the book to the class I remember looking up and 'WOW, I never saw so many wide eyes as I read aloud to the class. I share this book today with my daughter and I will with my grand-daughter. I love this book. Jeff Brothers

    It's Back in Print!

Just in time for a whole new generation of readers, Remy Charlip's rhythmical rhymes and Burton Supree's hilarious cut-outs take us to the turn of the last century in this marvelous book. The visuals and suprise ending make this perfect for dramatization.
