Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This book gives a simple account of the life of this humanitarian. As a child she was called Gonxha, which means flower bud. Growing up in a strict Catholic family with a brother and sister, she observed her mother's care of the poor. Although of Albanian background, they lived in Macedonia at a time of unrest. Gonxha was in the third grade when her prominent merchant father was thought to have been poisoned and her mother, left without funds, started a successful business. Gonxha spoke Albanian until the fourth grade, when she had to learn to speak Serbo-Croat in a new school. Even as a child she was serious and devout. When she was fifteen she entered the Carmelite Order. Later sent to Calcutta, India, she taught in a private school but was not satisfied until she could serve the poorest of the poor. She began the Missionaries of Charity and became world famous for her care of the poor. Surprisingly, this book tells that in later life she was troubled by nightmares which were relieved by an exorcism. This is one of the "Childhood of World Figures" series. There is a time line and lists of resources for further study. 2006, Aladdin Paperbacks/Simon & Schuster, , Ages 8 to 12.
