Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Even when Mama Jones begins sneezing and feeling shivery she doesn't go to bed; she has too much to prepare for three-year-old Ben's birthday celebration with the family that night. Grampastet Jones takes Ben for a hike, hoping Mama Jones will be able to rest; instead she works on a book of poems she is writing. By the time Papa Jones comes home, Mama's in bad shape; while she sleeps, the children pitch in and bake the cake themselves. The table is put near her bed, and the family celebrates Ben's birthday with joy and tender concern for Mama's condition. This mother is just a little too martyred, especially when she won't give up and go to bed. The clumsy line about her working on a book of poetry also seems gratuitous, as if to show that she is not ``just'' a mother at home. But some genuine warmth creeps into this book, and despite its clumsiness, it serves a pleasant function. Ages 3-7. (July)

K-Gr 2-- Mama Jones catches cold while gathering nuts to make a birthday cake for her three-year-old and gets so tied up in birthday preparations that it is only when Papa Jones insists on taking over the baking of the cake that she goes to bed. At this point the family all kicks in to get little Ben's birthday ready and surprise Mama with a decorated cake, party hats, and a rousing chorus of ``Happy Birthday.'' Thus Mama Jones learns that she is important enough to her family all by herself and not just for what she does. A warm, lighthearted family story, this is illustrated in crayon and watercolor wash in mauves, pinks, and purples. It's a charming book, and one that's perfect for Mother's Day, as it should inspire children to think more about why their own mothers are so important. --Patricia Homer, Lowville Academy, NY
