With a husband who works long hours trying to make partner and two rambunctious kids that are running her ragged, Margie Peterson is like any other worn-out suburban mom. When she decides to take a job as a PI for a seedy local detective agency, everything changes. It doesn’t take long for Margie to get in over her head: her first day on the job she totals her minivan, mistakenly enters a drag contest, and winds up in the bathroom with a dead transvestite. But when Margie finds her home number in the victim’s phone, things really start to get interesting.

Editorial Reviews

Author blurb - Sue Ann Jaffarian
"The minivan and her daughter's fry phone were the first casualties when Margie Peterson took on a part-time job for Peachtree Investigations. Karen MacInerney has delivered a laugh-out-loud, wacky and hysterical romp featuring an ordinary car-pool mom who finds herself walking on the wild side, coming face-to-face with plastic-wrapped cheaters, a murdered transvestite, and her own husband’s secrets."
– Sue Ann Jaffarian, author of the Odelia Grey mysteries

    So-so

Much of the dialog felt false to me. The storylines were sometimes too far-fetched (even for fiction), but if you like flamboyant characters, give it a try.

This book is a fun read!

I enjoyed reading this book. It's not too heavy, just a light fun read. I will read more of this series as they come out. It's just my kind of book. Relaxing, light, and easy to read.

Karen MacInerney’s latest book, Mother’s Day Out, lo

Karen MacInerney’s latest book, Mother’s Day Out, looks like the start to a promising new mystery series. Her new heroine, Margie Peterson, is a harried Austin mom looking for a part time job. When she answers an ad to become an investigator for a private detective she soon becomes embroiled in a murder mystery which involves Texas transvestites, illegal immigrants and forced labor, the Junior League, and irregularities in her children’s preschool. As she rattles around town in her increasingly battered minivan, Margie’s life gets more and more complicated. She starts to find some startling coincidences that lead her right back to her own private life. Clever plots, witty writing, and insights into the details of the real life of a busy mom make this a great read. This is the first detective you’ll find who has to take time out of work to pick up the kids at preschool and deal with piles of dirty laundry. I’m looking forward to the further adventures of Margie and her pals in the next installments of this entertaining new series

Looking for a fun summer mystery?

For five years, the most exciting thing in Margie's life was changing diapers, but when she took a freelance job as an investigator, all of that changed. One minute she's snapping photos of a married man dressed in nothing but Saran wrap in a motel with a hooker, and the next she discovers a dead drag queen in the ladies' room of a seedy bar. While chasing down embezzlers, wayward husbands, and sixteen thousand dollars missing from her own checking account, Margie and her equally quirky friends uncover a mystery spanning the underground Austin transvestite scene to the society pages.

In Mother's Day Out, Margie transforms herself from supermom to superslueth, and discovers her hidden talent for ferreting out the truth. Even when the answers aren't pretty, she keeps digging until she reaches the satisfying conclusion. Karen MacInerney expertly weaves a plot of intrigue and hijinks in this believable mystery filled with charming characters. Fans of the Gray Whale Inn novels won’t be disappointed. I can't wait for the next installment in the new Margie Peterson mystery series!

    Shades of Janet Evanovich

I really enjoyed this book. It was exciting, fun, and light hearted. At times it reminded me of the Stephanie Plum (Janet Evanovich) books, although since it is about a detective-mom it lacked the sizzle that comes from interactions with Ranger and Morelli! Still, it kept me reading and amused and it was fun.

    Light Read

I work full-time and go to school part-time, with very little time for leisure reading and was sorry I tapped into this book. I could not stop reading and really needed to study for finals. Funny and very different story line that I was not expecting. Looking forward to the next Margie Peterson book.

I couldn't put it down - funny, suspense, action packed

There were times I was laughing my head off and other times waiting to see when the other shoe would drop. If you love a good story with a character that you want to see come out on top of everything that can go wrong with trying to manage a house-hold, in-laws, school-principal issues, kids-identity issues, spouse-issues, Jr. League-Lady's issues, car-exploding issues, and new job as a PI-learning as I go issues - THEN YOU HAVE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE!!! ENJOY!!!

I would like to preface this review by stating that I do not usually read “Mystery” novels.
I am ok with who-done-it, but I much rather read what-done-it as in Paranormal/Urban Fantasy.

I like this Author from her “Sophie” series so I read this because of the Author.

With that said……when’s the next book ????

I admit, I really enjoyed it, and I am looking forward to more. Mrs. MacInerny has a way of capturing the reader with a fast plot and Characters you really want to root for.

Among the twists and turns, I found myself thinking how to get out of the situations and laughed at the solutions and by the end of the book I was wondering where the rest of the pages were, it can’t be over yet…..what happens next????

Fear not, this story is wrapped up so it’s a complete story, but it is done in a way that leaves it open for “Further Adventures”.

So….my advice. Grab this book, read it, laugh with it, save it, and re-read it when the next book comes out to re-establish the characters as friends you would like to visit often.
