All Music Guide - Rob Theakston
This supplementary disc to the unforgivably poor Motown Remixed experiment contains the original versions of songs that were sacrificed in honor of the horrible attempt to usher Motown's brilliant music to a new generation by "remixing" and "reconstructing" the original classics by contemporary hip-hop and electronic producers. While this is by no means a greatest-hits collection of the label's output for that, the Motown Classics: Gold collection is an excellent two-disc set worth seeking out, it is a diverse slice of music concentrated predominantly on the label's hits from the late '60s, '70s, and early '80s. While this is by no means a greatest-hits collection of the label's output for that, the Motown Classics: Gold collection is an excellent two-disc set worth seeking out, it is a diverse slice of music concentrated predominantly on the label's hits from the late '60s, '70s, and early '80s. This is where the eclectic nature and brilliant production/songwriting teams and artists of Motown shine the most: in sexy swaggering ballads like "Let's Get It On" and "Just My Imagination" and also in the upbeat but dramatic "My World Is Empty," "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," and "I Want You Back," all of which are not only staples of the Motown imprint, but of soul music in general. If you've been hiding under a rock for the past few decades or are new to the Motown sound, this is a solid starting point to explore from. Ignore the remix disc by all means and proceed straight to this one, for it is unquestionably the superior of the two.

    Flashback Alert!

I was in the market for a more comprehensive Motown compilation of hits by their original artists and found most sets a bit out of my budget ... then I came across "Motown Unmixed". Well within budgetary limitations, it is satisfying my craving until I can afford the larger sets available. A very good selection of hits - from ABC to War, you'll find more than one tune that will catapult you back in time!
