More About This Book

Overview

This exceptional selection of coloured maps brings together the best work of nineteenth-century British cartographers. Framed within ornamental borders, they represent a perfect combination of scientific surveying techniques and encyclopedic knowledge of the areas in question.

Of the nineteen full-page illustrations, twelve counties of Northern England have been taken from Moule's The English Counties Delineated, which was first published in parts between 1830 and 1836. Together, they cover an area from the Scottish border to the wash, with three separate plates for the three Yorkshire Ridings. Each one is hand-coloured to enhance the detail and freshness of the original. At once decorative and informative, Moule's aim, as he himself put it, was 'to produce a work of obvious utility at a reasonable price'. But he was also an antiquary who wrote several books about historic architecture, heraldry and genealogy; and it is these aspects of his scholarship which are reflected in the delightful details adorning the borders of his maps.

In addition to the county maps, there are seven town plans from the North. Most of these have been chosen from the work of the early nineteenth-century map-makers, G. Cole and J. Roper, with one from John Tallis's slightly later but no less charming Index Gazeteer of the world. The historical context in which all the maps were produced is outline in Ashley Baynton-Williams's interesting Introduction.

Accompanying each map, a local description, which has been abridged from original sources, provides modern readers with a clear idea of what life was like over 150 years ago. Alongside the picturesque views recorded by Moule, a developing railway network was enabling local producers in factories and farms to reach unprecedented nw markets through-out the country. The Industrial Revolution transformed the small market towns of Lancashire and Yorkshire into major manufacturing centres.

Over recent years, old maps have become popular collectors' items. This book will be a welcome addition to the library of existing enthusiasts and is sure to attract many new admirers of the mapmaker's art.
