Overview

For photography and film fans, a stunning visual book showcasing the latest film from the visionary director of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and Strictly Ballroom, starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan MacGregor -- a tragicomical musical set in the infamous, gaudy, and glamorous Parisian nightclub in the late 1800s. Moulin Rouge (selected as Opening Night Event at the Cannes Film Festival) is a celebration of love and creative inspiration that brings together gorgeous period design and modern-era pop tunes to create a unique motion picture experience. Nicole Kidman plays the club's most notorious star, forced to choose between a young writer's inspiration and another man's obsession. Ewan MacGregor is the writer who finds himself plunged into this decadent world where anything goes -- except falling in love. The film also stars John Leguizamo as Toulouse-Lautrec, Jim Broadbent, and Richard Roxburgh. The gorgeous book, designed by the Bazmark production team headed by Catherine Martin, tells the behind-the-scenes story of the making of the film, and features exclusive photos taken on the set by such world-famous photographers as Douglas Kirkland, Mary Ellen Mark, and Ellen Von Unwerth. Over 250 color photographs and illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
"I was left with the understanding that the Bollywood musical and its outrageous tragicomic storytelling succeeded because of a deal that exists between the film and its audience... the pretence that what is to be experienced is in any way real is swept away," explains Baz Luhrmann in Moulin Rouge! A Film Directed by Baz Luhrmann of his original inspiration for the movie. Absinthe; gaslight; sultry, pallid, Toulouse-Lautrec-inspired characters; drag; more absinthe; contortionists, Siamese twins, song, dance, sets and cinematography to set the mind reeling characterize this unprecedented musical film set in the "real artificiality" of Luhrmann's Parisian/Bohemian/modernized-turn-of-the-century vision. Cinematic and plot highlights, behind-the-scenes shots and confessions by producers, choreographers, cinematographers, editors, etc., along with images by guest photographers Ellen Von Unwerth, Mary Ellen Mark and Douglas Kirkland, give fans a chance to luxuriate in the stunning visual array that whirls dizzyingly by in the film. I'm the biggest fan!

I can't count how many times I've seen the movie, but it is well over 100, I've remembered all the lines and all the songs. I've studied alot about the real Moulin Rouge, I have both books, two posters, a signed picture, pins, a mouspad with the windmill, I'm going to Mommarte in 2005, I have the dvd and all the c.d.'s, I have a red dress similar to the one Satine wore while she sang 'One Day I'll Fly Away', I have a website I've been working own all about the Moulin Rouge and the movie. An unhealthy obsession? Oh yes. :-)

The greatest thing you'll ever know is just to love and be loved in return.

Moulin Rouge is one of the best movies ever made. It takes you into a world so exotic, so exhilerating that you never want to leave. You become absorbed into a world where their are no laws and no limits. When you read this book you have the same experience. You are absorbed into Satine and Christian's world. You fall in love with them as they do with each other. You cry your eyes out at the end when Satine dies in Christian's arms. You feel the pain that they go through. I think that people enjoy this movie/book so much because it takes you to a new and exciting world where anything can happen. I would give this book 110 stars if I could! Even if you haven't seen the movie, you will greatly enjoy the book. Moulin Rouge is truly a 'spectacular spectacular' movie. Moulin Rouge is a timeless tale of freedom, beauty, truth and above all things love.

    I LOVE MOULIN ROUGE!!!!

I'm not as obsessed as some others- I love the music and history as well as the movie& book.Yes, I have some collectibles ( not a million- but 3 or 4 including the CD's). I don't believe much in propaganda. The sad thing is most other reveiwers are probably in their mid- thirties and forties. I'm only 13 and I am more mature than they are. Stop and think- What if some of these people told Ewan McGregor & Nicole Kidman what they wrote?-They'd prbably be scared and think they need a life. It's not about the collectibles- it's about your love for Moulin Rouge. You don't need EVERYTHIG in collectibles to prove your love for Moulin Rouge- that's above & beyond obsession. Don't get me wrong- I absoloutly do love Moulin Rouge( including its history, the book & movie). I've watched the movie about 100 times (I may have to buy a new one because this one is worn down). I myself believe in all of the Bohemian ways- Freedom Beauty, Truth& (that which I believe in above all things) Love. I am also a poet, actor, singer, writer and artist. I also think Nicole Kidman&Ewan McGreggor had a wonderful chemistry on screen. The movie was wonderful- Baz did a great job. All of the romance, jealousy, seduxion, and excitement-wow!

' Love the movie? Read this...'

'The Moulin Rouge is one of those films that is definately out of the ordinary; for all of those whom have watched it, you know exactly how GOOD this movie is! The action packed drama film will leave you in awe whether it is from listening to Ewan Mcgregor's powerfully enriched voice to Nicole Kidman's entense and dramatic love scenes.Through watching the movie everyone discovers feelings they never knew existed deep down, even Nicole discovered she can sing, and she's an extreamly great one at that by the way. If you love the movie- you WILL love the novel!' Take it from me, I do KNOW all of the songs by heart, have seen the movie numerous amounts of times and know all the effort and time spent into the making of the movie in Sydney myself. 'The cast did a terrific job.'Now you can get the gratification of the movie and novel without being on the set! READ IT~it's loveley...

    Moulin Rouge and Absinthe

I saw this book at a college book store and I purchased it. It's a wonderful 'behind the scene' book as well with lots of historical background. Great book for the movie and absinthe lovers.

It goes into great detail about the filming the movie, the real Moulin Rouge, the shocking can-can, and much more. It is truly spectacular! VÉRITÉ BEAUTÉ LIBERTÉ AMOUR ~ TRUTH BEAUTY FREEDOM LOVE

    Moulin Rouge rocks!

This book was amazing, just like the movie. The photography is beautiful, and the comments from Baz Luhrman, who is an amazing director, are very insightful as to what the themes of the movie are. there is more to it than just a love story, you know. It also highlights Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman, who did a fantastic job. The history of the original Moulin Rouge nightclub was also very interesting. I really enjoyed the pictures and paintings of the time. All in all, the book was great and it takes me back to the movie every time I look at it.

    Truth-Beauty-Freedom-Love. . .Incredible

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would ever see such an incredible film as 'Moulin Rouge!'-especially for my 13th birthday. As soon as I watched this film, I was glued to the screen. I felt like I was there, and I forgot that the audience was even there. So as soon as the day was over, I rushed out and bought the CD, and of course, the beautiful book. I decided to buy it in hardcover, because if you wanted to spend money on an incredible book like this, I think you should get the actual book, and not a paperback replica. I loved how it was laid out, both photography and for artsy-movie lovers. I really give props to my fave actors, Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman. Not only did they use their all in this film, but they also had great charisma, and you must have that in a great film like this. I LOVE YOU BOTH!!! Baz Luhrmann is a genius, and I enjoy all of his work. Ever since his incredible interpretation of 'Romeo & Juliet', I have been tuned to whatever his upcoming projects are. Anyway, in a summary, 'Moulin Rouge' opens your eyes to a whole new world, and how much love is supposed to mean. Real love is sacrificing everything you have, just to be with that special someone. I think 'Moulin Rouge' expresses that point perfectly.

'Love is a many Splendid Thing'

Drama, romance, adventure, and pure entertainment is what comes to mind when you hear the title 'Moulin Rouge.'You know it was a good movie when you are still thinking about it several weeks after you have seen it. The set was outstanding, the actors did an amazing job at captivating their audience and making them feel as if that was their life story. The movie crept into the darkest chambers of our hearts and opened it to the possibility of love. It was a positive movie in which you leave the theater with a happy joyous feeling. I would have rated this movie a 10 however you could only rate it a 5. By:Erika Latta
